When a horse gets ready to run really fast or frick you up, their ears go back. Similar to when defensive linemen are rushing the QB and not concerned at all about the other team calling a rushing play. They have no contain (containment) responsibilities. Just pin your ears back and get to the QB as quickly as possible.
At least that is where I thought it originated.
