Multiple reasons why we are overlooked:

Our History: Which is mediocre.

Mizzou was good in the 60's and most of the 70's but that is ancient time in football.

80's and most of the 90's we sucked arse in a big way and lost any momentum from the previous decades. The national perception of Mizzou football was a joke and couldn't of came at a worse time with the beginning of the onslaught of mass media.

We finally hire Pinkel and he eventually gets the ball rolling. No national or conference championships though. Hell, two out of the three conference championships we were blown out. That's not gonna' cut it if Mizzou want's nation respect and attention.

We are in the best football conference now, but what comes with that is teams with historic pasts with way more win totals than Mizzou, way more championships (conference and national) and some of those teams still competing for national championships year in and year out.

Our recruiting also plays a part in it. Pinkel can sit there and find those 2 and 3 star gems, but until we win atleast a SECCG, don't expect much attention. The Vols may fall flat again as you say, but like it or not, they are kicking our arse in recruiting, and whether you like it or not, that will get you alot of attention.

I'm not going to complain about us being overlooked. I fully understand that until we win something meaningful, Mizzou will be looked upon as a decent program, but not worth national accolades. It is what it is.
