Didn't Texas get close in '08?
Played 4 and went 3-1.
I do not think any team in NCAA history has done what AU did in 1983. I am not sure, but I don't think so.
Also, I am not sure any team has ever played 83% of its schedule against teams with a winning record and lost 1 game or less. Or played 9 of 12 games against bowl teams (75%) and finished with 1 or fewer losses, especially when there were only a handful of bowls and it wasn't watered down.

Was a great year for Auburn. They were well-deserving of the final #3 ranking.

No, after reviewing the circumstances of Texas and Nebraska's losses, I agree that a #3 ranking for Auburn was appropriate.

Only beat 7 top 20 though.
Played 8 bowl teams as well and 4 ranked in the top 10.
The team being reference played 7 top 20 and 4 top 10 teams as well. But played 9 bowl teams and 10 teams that finished with a winning record. Over a 12 game schedule.
well whooptie freakin' doo

We beat 3 conference champions and played 6 different 10 win teams this season.
