Let them make the mistake of erecting that statue. LSU fans are going to deface the hell out of that thing. It’ll be unrecognizable.

Because football is the #1 sport at Alabama. It's what draws the largest crowds and makes the most money. Other schools cater to one sport over the other. Take Kentucky. In the 1950s, when Bryant was there, he was battling it out with the basketball coach for recognition. Bryant left after the school awarded the basketball coach a brand new car at a banquet. At that same banquet, the school awarded Bryant a cigarette lighter.

AU has:
_0_ undefeated Rose Bowl teams from the pre-poll era
_1_ AP/UPI-Coaches/BCS title from the poll era
_1_ free claim since we claim 1941 (stick 2004 in here)
By my 'bammer math' count, you'd have 2, not 7.
If we removed all restrictions and counted everything, as you had to do to get Auburn to 7, Alabama would have 26 titles. LINK

According to my "bammer math", Alabama has been awarded the national championship by a major poll in 8 different years. This doesn't include the 1925 undefeated season, the 1926 Rose Bowl championship season, the 1930 undefeated season, or the 1934 undefeated season - all of which occurred prior to the polling era.
The only year that legitimately deserves scrutiny is 1941. However, we do not claim championships for 1966 or 1977, both of which Bama was shafted.
All in all, Alabama has been voted the National Champion by at least one polling organization on 26 different occasions. We claim a total of 13 of those 26 - and have had a total of 9 undefeated/untied seasons.
In contrast, the only year in which Auburn (API) has been awarded the National Championship by a major polling organization was 1957. There have been a total of only 7 years in which Auburn/API have been selected national champions by at least one polling organization, and Auburn has had a total of 4 undefeated/untied seasons.
Again, I say no Auburn fan has any business brining up "National Championships".
