True. I'd feel the same if I was a bama fan.

quote:Can I get a link to that because I see no articles searching Yahoo where Brees says Saban turned him off to the Dolphins prior to meeting with doctors.
He turned him off before the docs and sealed the deal for NOLA later--that is all I am saying. Other coaches may have gone with the docs. Saban did, Sean did not.
These are some quotes I found:
quote:
Brees has talked previously about meeting with Saban during his free agent visit to Miami, and being told by Saban that the Dolphins would check the medical evaluations and get back to him. Payton, by contrast, told Brees that he was the Saints' first choice.
quote:
When Brees left the San Diego Chargers as a free agent following the 2005 season, he nearly ended up in Miami. But Saban and the Dolphins, wary of the condition of Brees's surgically repaired right shoulder, decided to trade for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper
quote:
Saban and then-Dolphins General Manager Randy Mueller flew to Birmingham, Ala., where Brees was rehabbing his shoulder, to squeeze in a breakfast meeting.
quote:
"The trips were very different in the feelings that I got from the people," said Brees, who visited New Orleans with Brittany on Saturday and Sunday, then flew to Miami for a Sunday-Monday visit. "Miami was one of those kind of places that, like, everyone would just expect, 'Why wouldn't you want to come to Miami?' Whereas New Orleans was like, 'We want you.' Like, 'We really want you. You are our guy. We have as much confidence in you as you have in yourself to come back from this injury and be better than you ever were before. And not only from the standpoint of the organization and the team, but also what you can do for the city.'
quote:
Then I go to Miami, and it's like, 'OK, you've got this doctor's appointment, you've got this nerve test.' It was like I was there to convince them I could still play."
quote:
Brees recalled having a meeting with Saban at the end of his visit, and Saban "was just kind of like, 'We'll see what the test results say, and I'll get back to you.' "
quote:
And I was like, do you want me here or not?" Brees said. "And he was like, 'Well, yeah, I do, I just have to make sure.' "
quote:
"It was a medical decision," Saban said during the 2006 season. "I don't think medicine, personnel or any of that is an exact science. I think we have good, professional people in that area. I think they made the best judgment they could make at the time relative to the circumstances

Drew's book. He talked about a meeting with Nick just prior to meeting with the Saints. This was prior to the docs and the bigger meetings with Miami coaches. Said "his personality is not real warm..you struggle to ever get a smile out of him.he's a hard nosed stoic kind of guy..". Other than the quote about haging up on him he did not really bash Nick. He just described nick...as Nick. I guess you could say he denegrated Nick (maybe I am biased) when he described the visit with Sean was the polar opposite--warm, open, etc. Drew did seem to express regret (maybe) in his book for the hang-up, stating,I knew I was not supposed to do that...in the world of negotiations, that type of reveal is verboten for someone in my position....but in the moment, I could not resist the honest descolsure".

quote:So Drew expected to be treated like a 5* recruit? Miami treated it like a business and New Orleans treated him like a savior. All quotes I linked did not state any of that and every story has two sides.

I mean it is not like the Dolphins did not already know Brees medical history as they probably had access to his medical records long before he ever met with the Dolphins/Saban/any of them.
This is almost as bad as those calling Saban a "failure" in the NFL when his career record is 15-17.

You know there is a time when a person has to come to grips with being a real person and having respect for another person. There are people who lock out all feelings about or toward another person and all they are to them is a buisiness deal and that is all. They forget that is a real person over there and to Saban, Drew Breeze was nothing more and Drew took offense to it. When Sean told him that they believed in him and he was what they needed and wanted. That made him feel wanted and needed as far as Saban, he wanted what the Docters told him he wanted.

So one treated it like a business decision and one treated it like a recruiting trip. Saban did what his doctors advised him to do and it is funny people blame Saban for that. Had he gone against the grain and Brees ended up not recovering then you would see people screaming the opposite, how he should have listened.

Again..if you read the book. DB's agent straight up tells him what the Dolphins are going to do..His agent tells drew before it happens. paraphrasing here "Miami is going to call you, tell you that the xrays and tests dont look so good and that we may need to discuss the number(salary) that was mentioned earlier. After getting that call with the front office of telling him what his agent TOLD him they were gonna do, he decided to call Nick his self to hear it from the horses mouth..and sure enough..Saban repeated the rhetoric. Drew even says "I know what you are getting at Coach, but I need to know if YOU believe in me." and Saban hesitates again in giving him a straight up, man to man answer. that is when DB knew he was Nola bound. He couldt play for a coach like that.

Funny in quotes I linked it says
So which was it? After a meeting or before that this conversation took place? Or did Drew have to ask twice?

In all things why should one have to ask a heart felt question twice. It is like talking to your kids heart to heart and they ask you do you believe in them and they say, when are you ever going to trust me in the things you taught me? Drew felt the same way he felt that Saban did not trust him enough to have the faith in him that he was going to be the QB that Miami needed and New Orleans did.
Posted on 8/21/10 at 12:04 am to CaseyMc2
So you are saying that Drew did have to ask Saban twice if Saban believed in him? Once over the phone prior to meeting and then once again after a meeting?
Obviously the quotes from nola.com that I borrowed on their article of the situation differ a bit from some of things that have been mentioned here in this thread.

The conversation that i described above happens on pg 104 in DB's book. And the portion of it is entitled "The Call" This takes place after he flys to Miami to meet Wayne and Nick.
Drew is expressing to his agent(TOM) that on his trip to Nola everyone was warm and genuine and he felt like from the beginning they believed in him. On his trip to FL he felt as if he needed to win them over on convince them that he was good enough for them.
His agent then told DB, "Look I have seen this before they are going to call you and tell you that the physicals didnt turn out well and they will threated to pull the offer from you"(Tom, Agent) Within 24hours DB says Miami does infact call him and say this very thing to him.
So THEN after that DB says to his agent..Before I make my decision I have to make a call first.. so he picks up the phone and calls The Dolphins front office.. he said he had to know where they really stood. He says "I know what they told my agent, but that could of been a bargaining stragety, what going through coach saban's brain in Miami" These are DB's words in the book.
So then he calls Nick and says this to him "I heard that my medical reports came back and your doc didnt like what they saw" At that point..Nick beings to say he doesnt know who to trust and they are professionals and they know how to interpet tests and tells him the number will have to change and that Drew has to understand the Dolphins situation."
Drew takes a deep breath and says "Coach, I know what your Docs believe about me, but my question is what do you believe. Do you believe I can come back and be better than I was before and lead your team to a championship?" Then there is a really short sentence simply...
Nick Saban Paused.
Drew then says that was all he neeed to hear. His pause told me everything,,,Drew does go on to say that nick began to talk but he says that he really tuned him out and just waited for a chance to break in..thats when he just tells nick..im going to nola..etc etc ..click..

quote:So he had to ask them twice, it really is a simple question why does no one want to answer it. Either he asked Saban this on the phone like ya'll are stating or he asked this after a meeting like the article stated. So did he ask twice, is there a bit of confusion in the book, is the article wrong?

Not really, When you put a personal feeling into something it becomes that and nothing else. You have to not only feel it but you have to show it and then the big one, that Saban did not have the umption to do and that was how did he<Saban really feel about it. Not the Doctors, not the agents not nothing or anyone else, but how did Saban feel about it? That is why Drew called him back on his own to see how Saban really felt. When you sit and listen to Drew tell it you tend to see something for deeper than Saban would ever be willing to do or go and that is let his intuition make the dicision for him. Drew saw that from the answer he got on the phone it hurt him internaly and that is why he hung up on Saban and the Dolphins. JMHO!
He asked him twice but at different times. Once before he called Saban and once when he called Saban. There is no misquote it is how you look at or take it or read it.

No he is not he just wanted to see Saban believe in him for who he was not for what Saban was looking for from a Doctor. My question is would have Saban wanted Drew if everthing would have come back positive? I personaly do not think so because the trade was already in progress it just needed for the test to come back positive and we all know they did not. It was just that Saban showed he did not trust Drew enough to have faith in him to Be what they wanted and NOLA did.

quote:I would bet he would, he has stated in several interviews that he wanted Drew but he listened to the team Doctors. Had the Doctors given Saban the green light they would have signed Drew and ceased talks with Minnesota.
My question is would have Saban wanted Drew if everthing would have come back positive?
quote:Let see trust a medical professional or an athlete who just wants to play? hmmmmmm Especially when you are trying to turn around a franchise you want to make the safe bets and Saban and the team Doctors saw Culpepper as a safer bet to recover.
It was just that Saban showed he did not trust Drew enough to have faith in him to Be what they wanted and NOLA did.
