God what a horrible decision by Dodd, a great man and fb coach but truly a disastrous AD

Interesting. I’ve always heard the 140 rule as the official reason for leaving, and I’m sure it factored heavily. But Dodd likely also thought GT would do better financially as an independent. He was a great tactician, and created a punch above our weight culture that persists to this day, but the decision to leave the SEC was a bad one and it was 100% Dodd’s doing.

Great entries on the SWC and the Sun Belt, too.

Yeah. The SWC inviting Ole Miss and LSU was a tidbit I did not know.

This article is from day after GT’s departure and discusses specifics of the rule changes at the time regarding scholarships and revenue sharing.
Dodd and Bryant had been cordial for many years prior, but were no longer speaking by 1964. Dodd believed he had Bryant’s support to change the scholarship rule at the SEC’s 1963 annual meeting, but Bryant didn’t attend and Alabama’s president voted against the rule change. Dodd treated it as a betrayal and GT’s president went into the 1964 meeting with a change the rule or we’re out ultimatum, which went over with other members about how you’d expect. Dodd and Bryant had also publicly clashed over a 1961 incident that left a GT player hospitalized. The two coaches didn’t speak for about 15 years, but eventually settled their differences in a meeting that Bill Curry helper arrange. GT continued playing Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia as an independent. GT & Alabama didn’t schedule each other again until after Dodd and Bryant had settled their differences. They resumed an annual series from late 70s until mid 80s, when GT started playing a full ACC schedule.

I’d rather have Tulane and GT back in the conference than ANY addition we’ve had so far or any other schools being discussed

Yes, that's something that would be a very interesting what if scenario.
They never responded to the invitations though so...
