Except that wasn't the ref that threw the flag...

After the thug Ricky Seals Jones speared Auburn's DB I couldn't care less.

How was he defenseless? He had sight of the entire offense when he was back in coverage to start the play

Because...

quote:

(Rule 2-27-14) Defenseless player: When in question, a player is defenseless

The exact situation is called out in the 2024 NCAA rulebook. Here is what it says.

quote:

Blind-Side Block ARTICLE 7 A blind-side block is an open field block against an opponent that is initiated from outside the opponent’s field of vision, or otherwise in such a manner that the opponent cannot reasonably defend themselves against the block

Note the rule says OR not AND.

By rule, the defender can still see the blocker, but if he can't defend himself, it's still a blindside block. From the time the DB turned his head to to see the WR in his vision until he was contacted was less than 0.2 of a second. That's less than human reaction time. Therefore, he could not reasonably defend themselves against the block and was, by rule, defenseless.

Look, NOBODY on this board has been more critical of SEC refs this year than me, but they got this one correct.

I agree, targeting needs to go period. It’s just another weapon used against the defenses in 99% of the calls that allows offenses more opportunities to move the ball. To me the game we watch these days suck, it’s like watching basketball.
Targeting should be a Sunday call and agreed upon by several rules guys.

You are flattening a 3 dimensional field to 2 dimensions to see him coming from the side. The opposite angle towards the endzone looks different.

The defender is clearly downfield from the blocker.

“ Contact with an opposing player can be forcible but not meet the criteria for the blindside block if the blocker who initiates is moving downfield toward the opponent’s goal line.”

That pic proves it was not blindside.

You simply do not understand the rules.

Got it. Just coach your tacklers to stare at the ground (or off into space) instead of being aware of blockers coming right at them.

It’s not really in question. It’s not blind, and he can defend himself.

I can count on one hand the number of offensive targeting calls I’ve seen. That was no more than the refs trying to keep the game from getting out of hand

Because it's pretty rare.

You don't often see offensive players throwing blindside blocks outside of the blocking box and when they do, they aren't usually forcibly contacting the head/neck area.

He did not debunk anything...
He may disagree with the rule, (so do I) but the block was targeting, based on the rule.

Personally, I think Targeting is a bullshite penalty, and they are making the game too soft. It used to be that players tried to hit each other as hard as possible within the rules of the game.. you tried to make it painful for the other guy to keep playing against you.

For Example:
It used to be that if a receiver went across the middle, and caught a ball, he would get demolished. This led to receivers being scared, and getting "alligator arms" you had to be tough to go across the middle. QBs had to be careful not to throw their receivers right into a demolishing hit...

The new targeting rules have led to defensive players trying to play half speed, so they don't get a penalty. I don't like it.

That said, under current rules, this hit was targeting, based on the current rules.
