Whatever success DuBose and Franchione had while they were the gumps coach did not last very long. DuBose was at bammer for 4 years. He had 3 sucky seasons and one good season. He was fired for having a payroll higher than the Dallas Cowboys and screwing his secretary shortly after his one good season. Franchione was only at bammer for 2 years. He had one mediocre season, one good season, and then he decided to get the hell out of Tuscaloser and become the head coach at Texas A&M.

Don't be so hard on CCTiger. His only hope for any happiness is for Bama to lose (otherwise, why would he show the logo for Bama's next opponent rather than his own school?) Over the next few years, while he will probably have the "once in a while" good day, most of his weeks are going to be very unhappy ones.

I assume you're talking about the AFCA trophy which is awarded to the winner of the Coaches Poll. The answer would be 1, from the 1992 season. But the AFCA trophy has only existed since 1986, so it's only been awarded 23 times.
However, the Coaches Poll has named a national champion since 1950, and Alabama has won the Coaches Poll National Championship five times ('61, '64, '73, '79, '92). That would be in comparison to LSU's three. LSU just happened to have won two of those three after the AFCA trophy was created.
