Picking a team out of a hat may not be bandwagon, but it's annoying in its own rite. Reminds me of the goth kids in high school who wore black nail polish purely for the sake of being different.
I didn't pick out of a hat, I had reasons. I wanted a team that was currently not very good so I wouldn't ever be accused of being bandwagon, they had to have a cool color scheme, a cool home town, some historical success, and maybe a big name player. At the time, one of the handful of teams that met all of that criteria was the Miami Dolphins in the midst of their 1-15 season in 2007. That's why I'm a dolphins fan (and btw, the following year they won the AFC East).
That's totally different than a 14 year old acting goth to get attention from people for being different.

It really makes all talk of anything university related very awkward if the conversation is not about sports. The blank look I get from frickers wearing Bamer gear is truly amusing. Especially when these dudes couldn't locate Tuscaloosa, or the state of Alabama in some instances, on a map

I was born and raised in Louisiana. Still a resident of Louisiana. And, I've been an Alabama football fan for 20 years(since I was 12).
I'll be a fan of whatever team I wish, thank you.
And, the reason I had barely heard of LSU at 12 is because all the bandwagoners had not jumped on till the year 2000.

My fellow Bama fans might not like this, but I'm prime example of what you're talking about. Although I do go to a game or two a year and love visiting the campus, I am not a University of Alabama fan. I am a University of Alabama FOOTBALL fan. I barely know anything about Alabama as a school, and I'll never have any interest in it unless one of my kids decide to go there.

Case in point
Went to conference were professor from UofA gave a talk on economic changes in healthcare
Next door neighbor: Hey mane where you been?
Me: just got back from a conference in Atlanta
Neighbor: (putting yet another script A on his back glass to now totally occlude it) ah hell yeah
Me: one of the speakers was a professor of Economics from Alabama
Neighbor: (long awkward silence)
We got 14 Nashanal chammunchips
Me: roll tide?
Neighbor: rawl motherfricking tahd! Wooooooo!

I loathe a band wagoner. If you follow any sport, or play a sport, you should stay loyal to your home State, especially if that sport is football. That doesnt mean you cant admire or respect another State's team, you can. But always show favoritism when it comes to your home team(s)
I know the feeling. There's a lot of bandwagon Bama and LSU fans throughout the state. Not as bad as it was 20 years ago but still pretty bad. Especially if you know the person was born in Mississippi. Sad

Got a lot of new Bama fans here in LA and most of the ones I know have never been to Alabama. Pick a team and pull for them through good times and bad, similar to marriage, but with much less BS.
