Opelousas Massacre, 1868: This was one of the major episodes of Reconstruction-era racial/political violence in Louisiana. White paramilitary forces and mobs attacked Black residents and Republicans in St. Landry Parish; historians estimate that hundreds of Black people were killed.
Colfax Massacre, 1873: In Grant Parish, a white militia/paramilitary force attacked Black defenders of the courthouse after a disputed election. Roughly 100 Black men were killed, making it one of the deadliest episodes of Reconstruction violence.
