Actually, in the early days it was basketball.
The real question is if the basketball schools go the way of football and leave the NCAA. The billions going to the NCAA would go to the conferences and the Big 4 (UK / UNC / ku / IU) would be the biggest winners.

You are absolutely wrong on FSU. When FSU is playing great football and highly ranked, they generate viewership from coast to coast, those that like and those that dislike. This came about by FSU hitting the road, from the Meadowlands to the Coliseum. As far north to East Lansing and down to Baton Rouge. People watch FSU.
