In the old days they only had one board. So if they banned you, they just forgot about you. If you didn't know how to contact the admins via email, then you just sat out and served your time. I sat out a year once in 2008 before finally sending an email asking to let me post again. As soon as I did that, they let me post.
Now there are all kinds of reinstatement threads and I'm pretty sure if you're banned from one board, you may still be able to post on another board to ask for help.
