Basketball season was over.
The NCAA tournament is a post season event that you get invited to.
They aren't getting another year, and the good ones are leaving anyways.

What about baseball?

Baseball shouldn’t count. Didn’t reach conference play.

At the conclusion of World War II they relaxed the eligibility rules for athletes.
For example Shorty McWilliams played for Mississippi State 1944,1946-1948 and also played for Army in 1945 and was the third RB in the backfield with Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard (St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS).
He was and is the only player in the history of the SEC to be a First Team All-SEC selection four times in football.
He was 10th in the Heisman vote in 1944 and eighth in 1945.
Imagine having three RB’s in your backfield who in the Heisman voting (1945) were:
1st-Blanchard
2nd-Davis
8th-McWilliams
Almost unbelievable to have that much talent in the same backfield on one team. Doubtful that would ever happen again.
