People speculate but that is the actual reason for conference expansion. We all know that now but back when it first started happening c.2011 I took a class taught by LSU President John Lombardi and he said acquiring TV markets is the reason for conference expansion.
I live in the ATL market. Suppose GT were to go BIG. I'm not going to suddenly watch Rutgers vs Minnesota just because GT is now in the BIG.
I'm not disputing what you are saying, and certainly, the LSU president is more in the know on why the SEC is doing something than am I; I just don't understand the logic of it.

Wouldn't Syracuse be a better pickup for NYC than Rutgers? At least Syracuse has some history at being decent in sports.

Rutgers may be the luckiest team in the history of college athletics. If not for their location they would be in the MAC

To answer your question:
If the SEC could add Maryland and/or Rutgers right now, with no penalties to pay for any entities and no wait, would you want to?
Would the ACC add them if they had to add the 2 as a package?
I guess the Big 12 would add them...but it'd be close.

It's the same reason Mizzou got into the SEC. It had nothing to do with access to the fertile recruiting grounds that Missouri is known for ( ?), it had to do with getting eyeballs from a mid-sized state with a pair of fairly large cities on the conference.
And all it took was two years to match and three years for Mizzou to exceed South Carolina's success in the SEC.

It is rather telling that the ACC picked up 5 of the Big East’s original 8 members, but never had the slightest amount of interest in Rutgirls.
Heck, WVU got into the Big 12 before Rutgers got into the Big 10, too. And I don’t remember Rutgers ever being mentioned as a Big 12 expansion candidate before the Big 10 invited them.
