Because not once during Chavis tenure at UT can I remember his defense coming up with the big INT or Quarterback sack or Stop on Fourth down to seal a game..I think Fulmer was pulling the strings all along after watching his defenses play at LSU

Name a BIG GAME where the defense saved us. Florida doesn't fumble down on the goal line we don't win the national championship..That was ALL AL WILSON that game..Those big Games with Florida?..Spurrier licks his CHOPS on Third and "CHAVIS". 2001 game against Georgia?..Matt Mauck running the quaterback draw over and over with John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth, Rashard Moore, Demetrin Veal and Aubrayo Franklin up front.. "PROWLER" against Florida in the Swamp..Rex Grossman still threw for 300 plus yards and it took a play by a 5 year cornerback in Buck Fitzgerald to bat down a pass or that game goes to OT again and we are screwed...

When did you ever hear an opposing offensive coordinator leave the field say..."CHAVIS IS GIVING US SOME LOOKS WE HAVEN'T SEEN BEFORE"?..NEVER.. Chavis was always an outstanding linebackers coach. He always had a pro bowl roster. Pressure on 1st and 2nd down and then on 3rd down came "THE MUSTANG PACKAGE"..Letting Florida go the length of the field with NO TIMEOUTS and Jabar Gafney's infamous "NO CATCH"..Chavis always played it safe.. Just like Fulmer did. The 2001 SECCG Exposed Fulmer...He had NO ANSWER FOR NICK SABAN..He got that old "DEER IN THE HEADLIGHT LOOK" he would get when we would play Florida... And don't say the 98 Game against Arkansas..Poor Stoerner just tripped and dropped the ball..Nothing Chavis did...

Then Chavis goes to LSU and starts bringing pressure...Think about it..

So if the Defense ever did make a play, I'm guessing it was all the players, and if they fail, it's the coach... This should be fun.

Two of the last 4 UF games w/ Spurrier saw the Defense stop UF in OT and stop a 2 point play to preserve a win. The '00 game was the dropped pass TD and the '99 game UF burned us for 17 points only to have the Defense give the ball back to the offense with a chance to score.

I doubt anyone will defend the end of game defense against UGA that year, or the 2nd half vs LSU, but I could point to similar breakdown by Saban defenses last season with better talent that the '01 UT team.

Case in point... a scheme that UF was not ready for... that worked (Prowler)... Defense makes the big stop that you say never happened, and still you act like it was all some accident.

I'm sure UF hadn't been ready for the Prowler. Besides that, the strength of his defenses at Tennessee and LSU have been their overall soundness, not gimmicks. If you want gimmicks then look for Joe Lee Dunn.

There is no doubt... Chavis is the best college LB coach of out generation, and its not even close.

No, he always had a mix of 1-2 great talents and then combined that with some guys he developed like the Eddie Moores, the Whitesides, the Stevensons, Jeff Colemans, etc.

OK, let me think about the parameters here... I can't use any game where the defense totally shut down the opposing offense. I can't use any game where the defense made stop after stop only to have the offense put them in a bad spot at the end of the game ('05 Bama, '08 Burn). I can't use any game where a player made a good play, because it's obvious that player was the entire reason for success, not the coaching.

I'll try but I'm sure these won't count:
'95 Bama Little's sack to end the game
'96 OSU Goaline stop vs. Eddie George
'97 Held Auburn Scoreless in the 4th quarter to overcome 6 turnovers for win
'98 Since I can't use UF or Ark... in the Auburn game there was a goalline stand and then the defense held Auburn to 6 seconds half points after the team went into a shell following the Lewis injury
'99 Shut down the Conference Champs Bama in the second half
'00 Overstreet gets a sack on the final play of the game vs. Carolina
'01 Carolina stopped in OT, the aforementioned UF stop
'02 Multiple stops in the Arkansas OT to allow Phillip Newman to bounce FG's off the crossbar
'03 Bama has the ball 1st and 2 (that's right 2) in the 4th quarter, where a first down ends the game. We force a punt and tie the game to win in OT. Also shut out Carolina in OT.
'04 Stop UF to allow Wilhoit to kick a gamewinner after he had missed an extra point. Stopping UGA's final drive to preserve a win.
'05 Stopping LSU the entire second half on the road
'06 Morley intercepts a pass on the final play of the Carolina game
'07 Stops against Carolina and UK in OT. INT to preserve the bowl win over Wisconsin. Did not allow LSU to score in the 4th quarter w/ a 1 point lead (Ainge throws INT)
'08 No wins that mattered this season.

Those are off the top of my head... and there was at least one each season he was coordinator. There were also multiple games where we shut down the opponent, or the offense had a turnoverfest and we had no chance.

Your selective memory doesn't make your argument true.

Chavis brought the same kind of pressure each year that UT when he had the talent, but like others have said in this thread, there was a talent drop off.

Yeah, we won the Game at the swamp in OT in 2001..Then went flat as a pancake the next week against LSU.."NO ANSWER FOR THE QUARTERBACK DRAW"..
https://www.databasefootball.com/players/bycollege.htm?sch=University+of+Tennessee
.. The talent he had was mind boogling... You're acting like guys like Eddie Moore and Keyon Whiteside were stop gaps..Eddie Moore was a 2nd round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins..Whiteside Played for the Colts..

And that Florida was the ONLY team Fulmer and Chavis could never beat..From 94 until 2001...They won TWICE...

Let's face it..The SEC was basically a two team race from 94-2001..Whoever came out of the EAST usually won it..Chavis could NEVER stop the "FUN AND GUN"..Never..

And the db's always got beat like rented mules..Look at the dates and look who played with whom..
