Did the SEC realize LSU was a bad Return on Investment?

Remember all those close games LSU "won"? Now that LSU is in deep doo doo, did the SEC realize they would lose out in the end by keeping LSU at the top?

Keeping LSU winning throughout the SEC Tournament and then LSU gets busted and has to vacate the season. That scenario doesn't help the SEC very much.
