It isn't going to take video footage. If they arrested him this quickly and aren't even looking for any other suspects, they have an abundance of evidence on this guy.

It should be relatively easy to prove whether and how Updyke acquired the herbicide since it is not readily available to the general public, and is not all that commonly acquired by individuals. It will be interesting to see if police find any of the herbicide at Updyke's house or traces in his vehicle, garage, etc.

I was still in school at AU and working the late shift at a local radio station when Bryant shuffled off this mortal coil.

I drove through Toomers on my way home around 7am. I seem to recall the weather was kind of crappy (drizzling rain and cold). The only 'shite tickets' in the trees appeared to be leftovers from the Tangerine Bowl win over Doug Flutie and BC (which is to say, not much).

If anyone rolled it for Bryant's death, they did a piss poor job.

BTW, "rolling the corner" back then wasn't really as big a deal as it became in subsequent years. Usually only a couple hundred drunken students involved, which is how it should be (one of my uncles was one of the original perps back in his API days). Like practically everything else associated with college football, it's gotten completely out of hand in the past 20 years or so.

To be totally honest, I wish they'd let the tradition die with the oaks. Maybe it will when the NCAA throws down the ATPB hammer.

They won't need all that. They will convict him with his own statements. Trials irl are nothing like tv. He's already said enough to get sent away for a long, long time.

He gets a slap on the wrist and wins the next governor election.

Yes they are, right alongside bammers media perception. After this the whole country will picture bammer fans as the hill people in Deliverance.

So his statement, and his statement alone, is enough to garner a conviction? No burden on the state whatsoever to having a showing of a prima facie case? Damn, everyone should put in for a position with the Lee County DA's office. I saw where this is only their 250ish or so DC case this year. What a plum job.

They may not, but you can be sure they have searched or will be searching his property in the event that he tries to contest the charges. His statement on the radio is admissible (upon proof it was Updyke's voice), but it isn't necessarily enough to convict him if he denies he did it. The DA will not rest his case solely on an admission on Finebaum.

LOL! Funny you should post that now, WSFA just had Gov. Bentley's comments on the terrorist attack on AU by bammer. Of course being a bammer he didn't have much to say. Seemed a little slow to be honest with you.

Dude, please. Do you not think he was questioned after his arrest? Do you not think he has made statements that haven't been made public? Given the level of intelligence he's displayed so far do you really doubt he hasn't already screwed the pooch? I asked one of our investigators about it this afternoon and he said this is the kind of perp you dream of.

You know, it is a funny thing with the law. Sometimes confessions are found to be inadmissable. Who's to say a crafty practitioner wouldn't find a way to get it suppressed?

As much respect as I have for the boys in blue...sometimes what looks like gold in the front end turns into a turd in the back end.

*In the interest of full disclosure, I think the idiot is going to be convicted. However, his statements, and his statements alone, are not enought to get said conviction. It is going to be the pile of crap they find on the moron that does him in.*

Hoping for what?

-That the system won't allow a conviction based only on a statement against interest made in the absense of counsel? No need to hope there.

-That LEO's sometimes think they have a slamdunk case only to have it swirl down the drain? No need to hope there.

-That the idiot who did this is given a fair trial, with representation, and the state proves beyond a reasonable doubt by a showing of great evidence that he is guilty of what he is accused of? Abso-fricking-lutely.
