Actually he would get the number one player in the country. How many times has Saban been able to do that?
Right! You should fire that bum immediately!

So the black QB ran the football program?

We don’t give a damn about that. It isn’t 1963. Whoever can continue to operate at a high level and represent our University with class and style. That’s who Alabama will get.

Not a thing was wrong with Sly. It was between two former players and Alabama was in such dire straits that Shula’s last name carried the day. We needed some form of validation and Shula is a famous and respected football legacy.

I respect that, but I think hiring Coach Croom at the time would have broken this thing wide open for Alabama, even before Coach Saban arrived. Like usual, we will never know

Honestly, I don’t think Mal Moore wanted to put the Croom family into the near impossible position of being the head coach of Alabama in 2003. It was the ultimate dumpster fire job.
The Croom family is one of the most respected in the Tuscaloosa community.

So, if Coach Saban had been hired instead of Coach Shula he would not have been able to survive this time period?
No he wouldn't. Which is why a coach of that caliber wouldn't have even considered the program at that time.
Are you trying to suggest Croom is Saban level?

Coach Croom would have been a great decision for head coach.
However given what Alabama was under in that time period (coming out of sanctions) there was a great many Alabama fans afraid that he would fail, and Alabama would be forced to fire him (include me in that group)
It would not have been a good look, at all. I hate it that Alabama hired Coach Shula, likely setting him up for failure, but having to fire him would be easier.
Can you imagine, Alabama hires Coach Croom, everybody in the nation saying Alabama is trying to fix their past, and then have to turn around and fire him?
No thank you.
