We fans pretend these coaches think like we do and hate each other, but in reality these guys are hired guns who have little if any emotional ties to their school (Kirby being an exception). They all want to win, but they don't take it personally like fans do.
So, yeah I can see this story being true. Gus seems to like to joke around with Kirby for some reason. Just judging by their body language, they look to be somewhat of friends, as the pic below shows.
