I have heard all of those stories but I was too young in 1975. People still say Grantz may have been the best QB of all time at USC.

He was until Connor Shaw came along. Jeff ran the triple option veer to perfection. He's still a great guy to this day and a Gamecock to his core being.
Ronnie Sunshine Bass was there at the same time (although we didn't call him Sunshine back then and he was also a great soccer player) ... but Ronnie would have started for a lot of teams but Jeff was too good. He was an All-American, literally, made several All-American teams that year.

Clowney won an Espy for The Hit.
It'll always be known as The Hit.
Completely changed the direction of that game.
Matter of fact, before last year's Outback Bowl, during the pregame dinner between the two teams, the two teams (Michigan and SC) almost got into a brawl when some Michigan players started taunting the Gamecocks that they were going to get revenge on Bentley for The Hit and they guaranteed they would knock Bentley out of the ballgame.
At the time Michigan had the #4 Defense in the country and the #1 Pass Defense in the country.
Bentley burned them from the 2:32 minutes remaining in the 3rd and all through the 4th quarter passing for 23 unanswered points and the come from behind win.
Vernon Smith, who was the recipient of The Hit, recently had a special video article done on him by Michigan about The Hit and how it's what he'll always be remembered for regardless of the fact that he did a lot of good things during his time at Michigan. No one blames him for fumbling the ball ... and few people remember the horrible call by the ref giving Michigan a 1st down which was the play immediately preceding The Hit and, The Call was Clooney's motivation for The Hit.
