I could be wrong, but Nick Saban refused a buy out on either end of his initial contract. Yep, the first year looked not so good. But I want to ask, where did the big contracts start with "buy outs"?

When they started signing contracts. A contract is an agreement between two parties to honor terms that have been agreed upon. If one party wants out of the contract, the other party may demand that the terms of the contract be honored.
Don't know why people call them buy outs.
Anyone who breaks a contract will absolve the other party from honoring the terms. This is "with cause".

I mean, this is really simplified but, in reality, all contracts have always had what you are referring to as a buy out.

They started getting big around when head coach salaries were starting to get big. They didn’t really start to get big until the 1990s when Bowden was the first college football coach to make over a million in a year.
Then everyone has continuously lost their minds to this day.

I was trying to remember the first coach that had a contract with a buy out.
