"Red gravy" vs. " brown gravy" is the distinction for jambalaya and tomatoes is *sort of* the distinction for gumbo. You'll find tomatoes more in places like New Orleans and very rarely in Cajun country.

I use some tomato paste in my seafood gumbo but I don't know of any chicken/duck & sausage gumbo that calls for tomatoes.
If creole gumbo calls for tomatoes then I've never prepared it or recall eating it. My gumbo recipe came from my mom who grew up in the Lake Charles area.
