That's BS. It has been a major along with the Sugar, Orange, and Rose Bowls since I can remember, and that was at least the early 1960s. I'm certain it was well before that too. Fwiw, those 4 were the only games on New Years day until about the 1980s.

Wrong. The Cotton wasn't part of the Bowl Alliance nor the BCS and lost it's major conference champion tie-in after the 94 season (the final SWC champ played in the Sugar Bowl). Hope this helped!

No, it isn’t BS. His timeline is a little off, but from the time the SWC folded until the Cotton Bowl got on board with the BCS it became a second tier bowl much like the Peach used to be. For a while one of the tie-in teams was from the freaking Western Athletic Conference. If you had a WAC tie in in the 1990s (think Mountain West today), there’s no world where you could be considered a top tier bowl. Later on they got division runner up SEC teams - again like the Peach used to do.

Around 2010 they moved to JerryWorld and became part of the playoffs, thus rejoining the major bowl world.

My timeline isn't off. The 95 through 2013 seasons it wasn't a major bowl. Texas was the final SWC champ and played in the Sugar. Let's look at the payouts for the 2013 season bowls (Cotton moved to Jerry World for the Jan 2010 game):

BCS title game: $18 mil
Fiesta/Orange/Rose/Sugar: $17 mil
Cotton: $3.375 mil

One of those definitely isn't like the others.
