We are in year 5 of a 10 year problem. High school players are getting scholarships to D1 schools at a drastically lower level. P5 and especially SEC want older experienced players. This down hill effect is high school players aren't going to go to JuCo or lower college football. They just hang it up.
Was talking about this exact thing w another dad at my daughter’s select softball practice last night. I wasn’t previously aware of it but it makes sense. Why take a chance on talent alone when you can pay a player with some proven college success? You can’t really blame the schools but this is where things are heading. And like you said, the sports will lose a lot of talent as some kids who really just wanted to play some college ball with no illusions of professional grandeur will just say no thanks to the Juco route.

Wouldn't contracts or salary caps just make it semi-professional then?
It's already semi pro, just throw in a players union for good measure. It's gonna happen at some point.

The NFL is terrible about this. Just look at all the retreads - QBs, coordinators, head coaches...why would college football be any different?
