He's a hell of a receiver, but is he actually a well rounded TE?

There's plenty of good receiving TEs that haven't won the Mackey bc they're knocked as blockers.

He was excellent against LSU this year. Really set the edge and tone of the game.

Yep. I was surprised when they played Bama. I figured he was really just a big WR, but he is a decent blocking TE. Not going to pancake a lot of people but he is willing and able to execute his blocking assignment when he has them.

I kinda see him from the Jimmy Graham school of blocking

NFL teams won't be asking him to block much.

He will need to work on his holding technique like the rest of the TE's in the NFL. There are no more Mike Ditka's playing TE.

This is what I’m thinking. He needs a good agent to sell him as a WR

he was okay at run blocking, but several times i saw him too anxious to get upfield or just straight whiff while trying to chip the end before running his pattern.

Did you know this?

quote:

John Mackey played three seasons at Syracuse University (1960-1962), alternating between the running back, tight end, and wide receiver position. His first two seasons were on the same team as Ernie Davis, the 1961 Heisman Trophy winner. Mackey caught a total of 27 passes for 481 yards and 5 touchdowns, while also rushing for 259 yards and 4 more scores.

I think Mr Pitts was a worthy Mackey award winner. Being an OL type TE is not part of the requirements.
