The fact that everyone else today is still talking about him today is a win.

impressive that Petrino got Missouri State its first playoff appearance since 1990 in just his first season

He did it with the talent they already had. That really is impressive.

Yes, he is a good football coach.

He is great at game planning and tremendous at Xs and Os. What finally did him in at Louisville is that Petrino tended to be lousy at roster management. He got lucky and got hired at other jobs before this caught up to him (leaving the coaches that took over that job after him to hold the bag) until his second stay at Louisville.

I am saying that he was a worse head coach than Chad Morris? Hell no. But he has some very real flaws his supporters shy away from addressing. They focus on the fact that yeah, he's a sleazy human being, and not on yeah, he's a great coach with a fatal flaw in terms of how he does his job.

He is a great football coach when the Jimmy and Joes are about the same level.

He was always weakest at recruiting.

He got to the playoffs with a 5–4 record

They went 5-1 this year and were MVC co-champs. They lost 3 times in the fall (once to Oklahoma and twice to UCA) but apparently those still technically count towards the record.

Nutt had an affair with a grown arse woman who had no affiliation with the university in any way.

Petrine had an affair with a recently graduated student who possibly WAS a student when the affair started. This women was engaged to someone else who worked in the athletic department. Then he hired this woman to a position which she was woefully under qualified for and which far more qualified candidates were interviewed and turned down.

One is a bad move as a husband. Despicable even. The other is that and also a bad move as an employee and employer. As someone who works in management I would sue my employer if they fired me for having an affair that had nothing to do with my work. However, I would expect to be fired if instead I hired the woman I was having an affair with to a position she was unqualified for and in a situation where I would have tons of “access” to her when on out of town trips.

Nutt was a bad coach and bad person, but not a bad “employee.” Petrino was a great coach and a bad person who also proved to be a bad “employee.” That having been said, he stopped giving a damned about football before we fired him and his hand in every single aspect of the program micromanagement style is all but impossible to maintain if not 100% devoted.
