I don't care what he is doing in the NFL. The thread says SEC.

Look. You can believe what you want, ok? I bet I can find 10 non Georgia fans that says Herschel was a better back than Derrick Henry. You would be hard pressed to find 10 non Alabama fans that says Henry was the greatest.

This is just an appeal to popular opinion fallacy, and just like you - none of those people will be able to back it up when pressed.

I doubt any of them realize you didn't play a single ranked team the entire season, etc.

Wow, 65 years old and you still didn’t forget to add the close parentheses at the end - impressive!

You ought to see how often I have to go back and correct spelling errors and other parenthesis, though.

Growing old is not for the weak of heart.

Coming from a Bama fan, Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson are 1A and 1B. Take your pick at 1A.

I’m closing in on 50, and that damn close parenthesis gets me more often than not.

No, it did not.

And yet we won the game and were the National Champions. had we lost we would not have been champions.

Yeah, but not as a result of winning the game. The polls could have still ranked someone else higher if they had wanted. It was just another game on your resume.

quote:

Not really. There were several bowls that determined the champions. The Cotton Bow did. The Rose Bowl did. The Orange Bowl did. But that year, because we were ranked #1 in the country going into bowl season it made the Sugar Bowl that much more important. Had welos, you are correct, that a different Bowl would have determined the champion....so again. There was not designated bowl that determined the champion, but that year the Sugar bow hosted the team that won the National Championship.

Yeah, because those other bowls had tie ins for other conferences. Still, none of the bowl games were national championship games. They were just bowl games, and the final poll came after the bowl game.

Georgia didn't win that game and them become national champions the way they did this past year in an actual national championship game. I'm sure they had to be feeling good about their chances for obvious reasons, but they still had to wait for the polls to come out.

The whole argument is totally opinion, no doubt. But to get a really good feel you need to see them play. And I have.

Which, again, has nothing to do with how good their run defense is. You get too hung up on rankings and don't pay enough attention to the important details. That comes with age and experience.

So have I. The only reason Walker gets the hype is because he was a freshman at the time.

I absolutely agree. I love Herschel Walker, but if pressed it would be hard to pick between them.

In Bo's defense, a lot of people don't realize that he played in a wishbone offense his first year or two.

But, I still would pick Herschel Walker because....well, we know why. I'm a Georgia fan.

And thank you for your input.

Then post how good the run defenses were. Because so far you just keep making a claim with absolutely nothing to back it up.

Because I find the odds of there being like 6+ top run defenses who don't make the top20 in 1980 to be very low.

Are you saying had we lost we would have won the National Championship? We would not. So, yes. We won the championship because we won that game. It didn't matter what any other bowl game results were. We wrapped up the title with that win.

I'm not sure why this is so difficult for you to understand.

quote:

Yeah, because those other bowls had tie ins for other conferences.
The only bowl (That I can remember) that had a two team tie in was the Rose Bowl The others typically had a tie in with one conference. That's why you might see a SEC team in the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl or Sugar.

The Rose Bowl back then was the only bowl in which only the Big 10 and PAC 12 champions played each other.

Yet he had more yards and TDs as a sophomore and Junior.
His freshman year got him noticed but it wasn't even his best season.

You look it up!
If you don't know the difference in todays game and the game in the 80s then that's on you! It was a much more run heavy game in the 70s-80s. EVERYBODY put a premium on stopping the run.

Lok if you are too young to know the difference in the game sI am not hear to school you. Do just a little research. Start with looking at time teams threw the ball compared to how often the ran the ball and you will see a clear pattern.

The team I remember throwing the ball the most was 1981 Pittsburgh (I think...or 1982) and they had Tony Dorsett, so they ran the ball a ton. They threw the ball so much because they had Dan Marino.

ETA
My bad. When I used Pittsburgh I was thinking of 1976 era.

And you could say the same thing about every game you played that year.

When you say "national championship game" you are implying that the winner of the game, is the national champion, and that's just not the case. You're only using it because it sounds much better than "Beat #7 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl" which is the reality.

Depends on what year, eventually they all had tie-ins. Now they tie in that shite all the way down to like 6th and 7th place teams.

It's why I laugh at USC fans claiming they have a better claim on 1978. #2 Alabama played #1 Penn St in their bowl game, while #3 USC played like #5 or something Michigan. If they didn't have that tie in, then USC might could have played Penn St. Instead, Alabama did.

Still, nobody ever calls that Penn St vs Alabama game a "national championship game".

You're just cherry picking parts of the game that suite you while ignoring the others ways it was affected. That the offenses were also more focused on running the ball, your lineman only focused on run blocking, not pass blocking. Your receivers were more focused on run blocking, not route running, etc.

You played #7 Notre Dame in a bowl game. Stop trying to exaggerate it.
