I did hear this and did not believe he would perform as well as he did, but let's not get carried away here. He is not a great/elite college QB. He gets a lot of help from a good O-line and RB's.

As far as the O-line, please don't try and say you knew it would be as good as it was. I saw numerous Bama fans say how shocked they were to see the line play as well as it did last year.

Better than JPW. Most people didn't think a first year starter could be better than our SR QB.

Was he that much better? The offense didn't change drastically. It's still turn around and hand off the ball most of the time. Or 3rd down run a draw or a screen. I did see Bama go a little more spread this year though.

He managed the game much better and made some key plays that JPW couldn't make. I think the biggest surprise is how good our OL did last year after losing 2 AAs. If not for that, we would have been hurting.

Exactly. This hasn't received near the attention that it should. It's not surprising though, the big guys are always forgotten about. Alabama's OL definitely stepped up in big ways this past season.

Very true. Me and most Bama fans I've talked to wasn't that concerned about McElroy because we knew he'd be able to manage the game for us and make more plays than JPW did. We were all concerned about our inexperienced OL and Pendry/McElwain done a great job IMO.

I love threads like this. The OP is correct in pointing out that last offseason the standard rantard flame was that all optimistic Alabama fans were delusional - that we would not only be worse than our "lucky" season in 08' but that we wouldn't even win 8 games. To a man, they all based this on our new QB, and the younger OLine.

Collectively most Bama fans said that GMAC would be better than JPW (which he was - mainly because unlike JPW, GMAC doesn't lose games for us), and the rantards called us crazy deluasional Gumps. The Oline was more of a mystery to most Bama fans, and I think we were suprised. It's the same thing this season except with the defense. Sure some of us Bama fans are a little too optimistic, but the truth is that in spite of your hopes - Saban is still our coach; if anyone can improve the defense it's him. I would not be shocked if we are better in 2010.

Bottom line is this: for 2+ years the haters have contantly predicted Bama failure. You are all like the little boy who 'cried wolf'. According to the Rant, the sky will fall next week, or next game, or next season, or next whenever - but the sky is still there, and Bama keeps winning, and all of you you hate it.

So flame on, whine on, bitch on, survive off of your little hypothetical 'What If' scenarios, cheer for other conference teams, create your conspiracy theories, and keep searching for chinks in Bama's armor. We know you are only pissing on our optimism because that's really all you have left. It's pretty damn funny, and it's why so many Bama fans flock to this board.

well when a team actually manages that we'll worry about it. Auburn was probably the closest to getting it done, and "the ginger" came up big at the end of that game.

After 100 years of sucking at every sport except football, Alabama has accepted the fact that Football is the only sport that matters - which means we're pretty much as happy as we can be. If you think we care that we aren't winning national championships in baseball and basketball, you're wrong. There are some that do - but the majority of the fanbase is perfectly content with having a dominant football program and mediocre baseball and basketball programs.

This is precisely what I am talking about. The hatred is so strong with this one that he has to resort to the 'other sports' flame. Hilarious and pathetic at the same time.
