The homeless problem in NYC is nowhere near that of SF. The big difference is the homeless in NYC try to blend into the background (like most large cities), those in SF are empowered to do whatever they want (and they do). The Homelessness in most of the country is due to mental illness or financial issues, those in SF do it as a life choice. The citizens pay for everything to feed them and to accommodate them. It is destroying the city.
Ah ok. I really didn't know.
Don't pay much attention to that shite.
Just know people dog NYC for it on here and I really haven't seen it too crazy.
Sure you got your smelly ones yelling about Jesus and whatnot, but that's in all cities. And probably worse in the hotter ones because the heat makes the smell worse.

The cost there is not much different than that to Dallas or PHX

Mainly talking about airline fares. Decent Hotel will cost you about $50 per day more and dining is what you make out of it yourself. You can eat just about the same in Cali as anywhere else depending on what you eat. Also if you stay in SF, you do not really need a rental car. So it all equals out in the end.

Now the homeless have taken over
I was in San Fran 2 years ago and didn't see any evidence of the homeless taking over, except for one of the parks near Chinatown.
Not to say they don't have a homelessness problem, but I didn't see it to be as bad as you're portraying. But I was only there for 2 days, so maybe I just hit areas they weren't.

You must have been in a hole the last two years. It has been all over the news recently. I was there in June and was shock at the condition of the city. I sat in traffic for two hours to go about 20 blocks. I was there three years ago and parked in the middle of the day in the Haight-Ashbury district for about 20min. When I returned my back glass of my rental car wash broken out and items were stolen (nothing of value). At the rental car agency they told me it is a common problem in SF. I know the area and have seen its downfall the last few years. Just a warning to those who are going.

Thinking of going in August or Sept and getting to a Giants game.

That's not all that different than most cities now days.
NYC is the same way. So you mostly walk or take the subway.

The biggest difference between NY and California homeless is California has homeless people everywhere. Even in small towns which is the weirdest thing you’ll notice.

If your primary goal is to see a Giants game. Stay near the airport. If it is to see the sights of Fisherman's Wharf and the surrounding area, stay near there (be careful). Again, Monterey is a couple of hours away and is a great town. Stay there and travel to SF for the day. Big Sur is great and driving down HWY 1 is a must do.

I stayed in an AirBnb in Russian Hill - really close to Lombard St. It runs into Nob Hill. I liked the area. I didn't drive anywhere, just relied on public transportation and Uber. Traffic was pretty bad everywhere we went, but nothing unexpected for a big city. I think most of the hotels are in the Tenderloin district. I did all the touristy stuff - Golden Gate Park, Lombard St, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. And just kinds wandered around. Didn't do Alcatraz though.

There are 6.9 million people who have survived Baghdad over the years.

I currently live in SF, Nob Hill area, and can say the news has overblown the homeless problem. Stay out of the Tenderloin the homeless situation is comparable to any other major city. The issue is the Tenderloin borders Union Square, a popular tourist spot. Haight-Ashbury is Haight-Ashbury, it's the birthplace of the hippie movement, so there are a lot of young transients that are trying to re-create the summer of love.
The city overall is a great place to visit if you have time before or after the game. The weather won't be great, but there are some excellent indoor places to visit that people don't know about, Ferry Building, Legion of Honor, Exploratorium and California Academy of Sciences. If the weather clears up, check out the Cliff house, it also has to easy walking paths with amazing views.

Are your an old timer to the area or one of the new problems for the city? I know the long time residence I talked to say the Googles of the world are killing the city. I use to love SF, but I’ve watched it deteriorate over the last 10 years.
