auburn was 20 seconds away from being the first team ever to beat 3 consecutive top 5 teams... oh well.

Alabama and Missouri weren't true Top 5 teams.

Taking off the red and black glasses, I think the rest of the conference will be disappointed that AU doesn't take a dramatic step back this year. I don't expect them to repeat as SEC champs, but I don't expect them to go 7-5 or 8-4 either.

It's fun to point to the unreal amount of luck they were fortunate enough to receive during their magical run last year. Problem being, that was only Gus's first year as HC. Typically, SEC HCs top out in their 2nd or 3rd seasons before losing some steam. Unfortunately for the rest of the conference, his dramatic string of luck occurred in the year when he should have went 8-4 ish. I would have likely predicted them to finish 1 or 2 in the West this year even if they had finished 4 or 5 last year.

Combine that with the fact that the SEC West will be down this year (compared to year's past) and you could be looking at AU taking the West again. They're unquestionably the favorites IMO.

I'll get tarred and feathered for suggesting this, but I think Bama and LSU have lost their stranglehold on the West. Both defenses looked much more vulnerable last year than we've grown accustomed to. Plus, I wouldn't be excited about either team's offense at this point, especially LSU. Saban was panicked enough to hire Lane Kiffin and to put his eggs in the Coker basket.

What happened in last year's fluke filled season is not he only reason they are the favorites in the West coming into 2014.

Auburn could play only 8 guys and Moo State still couldn't beat them by 2 touchdowns.
