Auburn or Alabama?
Here are the top 5 states of origin (non Alabama) for UA and AU freshmen for fall of 2009:

UA

Georgia: 472
Florida: 263
Texas: 245
Tennessee: 209
Virginia: 113

AU

Georgia: 671
Florida: 248
Tennessee: 159
Texas: 117
Virginia: 64

The top 5 is the same for each school, and the only state that AU enrolls more from is Georgia, and that has more to do with being right on the line than being 'national'.

Rupert on David Letterman had a Bama shirt on.

As to perception nationally, when Auburn has a movie with Gene Hackman referencing the Tigers, then yall will have arrived. Bama is the flagship and is better known. Not a knock on Auburn, just a matter of being the State's namesake along with it's history.

The University of Alabama once again leads the nation with five students named to USA Today’s 2009 All-USA College Academic Team.

Laura Dover, a junior from Jasper majoring in philosophy and Spanish; Adam Knight, a senior biology major from Tuscaloosa, and Ynhi Thai, a junior from Long Beach, Miss., majoring in chemical and biological engineering, have been named to the Second Team. Laura Godorecci, a senior from Northport, majoring in interdisciplinary studies and classics, was named to the Third Team. Alexander Flachsbart, a senior economics and political science major from Concord, Calif., was named an Honorable Mention.

UA has the most team members of any school with five. Harvard, the U.S. Naval Academy, Louisiana State University, Florida State University and Southern Illinois University each have three team members.

This year’s team brings UA’s total for the last seven years to 36, a figure that tops all other colleges and universities. In addition to this year, UA had the most students on the list in 2008 with seven, in 2006 with six and in 2005 and 2003, both with five.

I was referring to The Mentalist where a psychic mentions Roll Tide to a waiter and asks if it means anything and he said one of his relatives played for Bama in the 1960s

Both are solid schools. Bama is probably more recognizable on a national level for their football history.

ok, so what you're saying is... Go to bama and become a waiter? Quite a career path. Lest we forget bama's other claim to fame.... A retarded football player with the last name gump.

Besides, Marshall wore an Auburn shirt in "How I Met your Mother" a few times. If that doesn't say we've arrived than I don't know what does.

Regardless of who actually deserves it. Alabama is always gonna look more attractive because of exposure.

National exposure of UA is exactly the reason Auburn has the better reputation nationally. Think Wallace standing in the school house door, worshiping football coaches, the Mikes, Forest Gump, etc.
