Well KP, the thread got me kinda aggravated (which is not difficult these days considering how bad we suck ).

Anyway, more what I was referring to was at the end of the season having an arguement for being the best team in the country (i.e. legit or semi legit claim to a title).

As for the 4 times I mentioned:

'83 - AU should have been named the NC without a doubt.

'88 - AU had no NC claim, but were 1 point away in the earthquake game from playing Notre Dame for the NC in the Sugar Bowl. Instead they played the true best team in the country at the end of the year in FSU (who was 11-1) and got beat after a TOTAL bullshite no call on Dieon Sanders going in for the winning TD on 3rd down at about the 8 yard line. AU outscored their opponents 331-79 in the regualar season. Pat Dye called it maybe the best team he ever coached (included all the NC teams he coached under Bryant).

1993 - AU beat #1 UF and went undefeated. Easily in the argument for the best team in the country. Probation though.

2004 - We all know about.

So, my point was more AU had a claim as the NC or the best team in the country 4 times in the last 28 years since the Bear.

And yes I agree Bama was plenty relevant through most of the 90's and a few years in the 80's post Bryant.
