They can slack off during prep that week on the physical training which helps their bodies heal up from bangs and bruises, but they get snaps on saturday to keep them in rhythm and keep the vibe going, or in the case of a loss the previous week, get some confidence back. You get your starters out early so they dont have to play an entire game, PLUS the backups get reps which in case disaster strikes the following week and someone gets hurt, they arent 5 weeks removed from being on the field.
