I read an article about Jim Crutchfield of DII Nova Southeastern. He's a coaching genius who wins with full court, up-tempo. In the comments section, readers were asking why no one in DI plays like Crutchfield's teams. Afterall, they won a championship.

Idiots.

Two things had to be present for Nolan's teams to succeed at a high level.

First, he had to have talent - at least 9 deep - that was better than yours. Generally speaking, if talent was equal or he was at a deficit, a strong X's and O's coach could sometimes exploit the full court pressure and also dictate tempo.

Second, once the NCAA cracked down on hand checking, his full court pressure and half court trapping was no longer effective. When Arlyn Bowers or Corey Beck or Clint McDaniel could use their hands to steer you where they wanted you to go, there was nothing a guard could do. But once that advantage was neutralized, the Hogs were just a foul waiting to happen.

Greatest win was the SECTourney.
There could not have been more pressure.
His job was on the line. Playing w/o a contract.

As shown by the number of times Beck fouled out in the 95 season.
