An easy solution is not having the bye for conference champs

The problem with that is that without a bye, no team in the top 4 would want agree to play in their CCG.
Same reason why SMU was put in the playoff. If they had been left out, no team that was ranked high enough to be in the playoff who would potentially drop out with a CCG loss would ever play in a CCG again.
