You are short sighted. The media is supposed to expose these things but they just encourage them. If they won't vett the stories then that is like the police overlooking a murder. It will just encourage more. ND had no fear is covering this up.

Though I agree with you to a certain point, the real issue here is the event itself. Not the way it was covered.

Saying that is like throwing a bone in your back yard and hitting your dog because he chewed on it.

Straight news is boring. The media will always alter the news to make it more "news worthy"

I dont think anyone in the media or ND "encouraged" this fool to make us this story

What is not interesting about it?

First of all, it is rather bizarre. Who the hell dreamed up this scheme? It certainly makes Te'o a more interesting and human character.

Secondly, the fraud clearly helped bolster Te'o's reputation - which together with being a Notre Dame player landed him in NYC as a Heisman finalist. So he duped the entire nation, which is actually pretty funny if you think about it.

Thirdly, how the hell did he get away with this? How did nobody check out this story until now? That's crazy to me.

Oh there is plenty of fault with Te'o. Making up a story like that is sad and pathetic. I think it's a good thing the media got embarrassed.

I never said any directly encouraged him but when you see the media lapping up the lies you tend to lie more because you don't think they will vett it.

Nah I think it is just confirmation bias. News is inherently selective. It has to be. You can't give all the information about something, you have to reduce it to a comprehensible form. We all do this, for instance, when we tell stories to friends. It is human nature to assume information is true if it confirms our pre-existing beliefs. So if a journalist is selective about what information he gathers and reports, confirmation bias is a problem.

Professional norms of fact-checking (etc.) are supposed to guard against this bias. Sports journalism has always been particularly bad about upholding professional standards anyways. This is why I find your bone metaphor to be particularly appropriate. However, I think the journalists are supposed to at least take a look at the bone, sniff it maybe, just to make sure it is a bone.

I agree. Bias is always the reason for the season. There is no way to really "report" any store without some kind of bias. There is no way to report every single event. Plus, if its not interesting, who cares?

You know the media is going to run with a story like this and who knows where they will run to. Just don't give them that chance.

Huh?

Out of all of this, you think that the media and Notre Dame are the issue? I can see how you could possibly blame the media, but what exactly did ND do to create this?

They could have easily found out that his was a fake before it ran in September. All they had to do is make some calls. The media controls what we see and hear and have a higher responsibility to vett their stories.

At the very least, coast, per their version they knew about this shite show for at least 3 weeks and didn't report it. They just allowed the ridiculous ND fuff pieces to continue. Looks pretty dishonest to me.

Would have been an incredible distraction. As shitty as it looks, it was probably best to postpone any announcement.

I think this is one of the more interesting stories in a while.

Cheating on a spouse, stealing, PED's, recruiting violations, academic scandals etc all happen all the time and I get tired of those stories, but this one is something new and different.

I agree, but from what I understand, wasn't manatee supposed to reveal it this week? Maybe the school was giving him a chance to come clean without throwing him under the bus?

I just feel that this is all his fault. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
