Are they a Saban retirement announcement away from going back to the Shula years?
It must sting, knowing that Texas will never reach Alabama's level of excellence, and that Alabama has had two head coaches with more national titles each, than Texas has in total.

It was one of his problems, but ultimately the one that cost him job a year earlier than it probably would have.
The 2006 season was more than just losing to Auburn. They only beat one team with a winning record but only because Hawaii didn't really know Colt Brennan (RIP) was a gamer until they put him in during the 2nd half (and he was in the red zone with a chance to complete the comeback late in the game). I don't think Alabama beats Hawaii in the opener if June Jones knew what he had in Colt Brennan.
So they had a win over an 11-3 WAC team but lost to everyone else .500 or better.
Coming off a promising 10-2 season, he probably could've lost to Auburn again if the overall performance was better. Shula's team lost to a bad 3-9 Mississippi State team coached by the guy the school passed over in favor of him. His team was down at halftime v. an 0-12 Duke team and didn't really pull away until very late in the game. Even if it looked ugly like most of the back half of the 2005 season, Shula could've lost to all 4 ranked teams on the schedule for an 8-4 record and easily kept his job. Edit: Been awhile but forgot that Alabama also was down to a 4-8 Vandy team at halftime and didn't take the lead until a game winning FG midway through the 4th quarter.
Glad he didn't though.

Shula would probably go undefeated against Texas. Very sad.
