re: After 2009, who will finish as the 3rd best QB in the SEC?

Mustain was throwing 1 interception for every 14 passes and that had non-bcs schools he faced as well as MS and Vanderbilt who was 9th and 10th in the league in pass defense mixed in. You can't beat good pass defenses like throwing that many picks. in 06 lsu had the SEC's top pass defense by far, holding opponents to 47% completion. Next was GA with 53%, so there was a wide gap there. Can you imagine Mustain starting that LSU game? it would have looked like Ark vs Bama 2008. Be glad Dick relieved Mustain b/c he was a much more efficient QB.

I couldn't see him going worse than 3/18.

i could see him throwing about 5 interceptions though and the game being out of hand by the 2nd quarter like Bama vs AR last year.

I heard he had a good spring, is there any doubt or a chance for competition or is Mallet officially "the guy" @ QB?

Preseason interviews seem to indicate Mallett is a clear number one with Wilson a very trusted second, giving some good competition. Petrino already said Wilson will for sure be taking snaps this season, but I don't think there's much risk of his taking over the starting role.

Word. Having a solid backup QB is always a good thing.

That may be the case, but that's pretty bold considering he's taken 0 SEC snaps.
I think he'll be solid, but his intangibles will help determine how successful he is as a SEC QB.
How much of a leader is he? Is he mobile enough to make plays with his legs? Will his teammates respect him or try to fight him? Will he stay out of trouble off the field?
All legit questions, IMO.
All indications point to him being a good leader who has the respect of his teammates. I think his discipline issues are over. He was arrested for public intox, but was given extra conditioning early in the morning, and a curfew at 11 pm each night throughout the spring and summer. As for mobility, that's still a question mark. He's lost about 15-20 lbs of fat and Petrino has stated that it will help his mobility. He was never a burner though... I think his 40 time out of high school was 4.8 seconds. Hopefully he has gotten it down a little more so he can escape the rush if he needs to.
And our backup is very solid. His arm is nearly as strong as Mallett's, he's got great accuracy and touch, and he's also a good leader. He's shorter, I think 6'2", and 215 lbs, but he's much more mobile. One of the major reasons why he is the backup is because he doesn't have as much experience under center, and therefore his playbook is more limited than Mallett's. Regardless, he will be taking the first series of the second quarter during our opener, and I expect him to share a lot of playtime with Mallett throughout the year. One advantage he does have is that he played in four or five games last year, but was granted a medical redshirt after coming down with a severe case of mono.
A lot of people expected Tyler Wilson to beat out Mallett during the spring. He's really pushing Mallett, which is great.
I feel like we have one of the best quarterback situations in the conference.

Would, could, should?...Hell, everyone SAW what Nutt did to our team after that South Carolina game...that's right...Nutt.
Reminds me of an aquaintance who had completely had his arse whipped within an inch of his life. When asked why he didn't defend himself with the weapon (he usually carries), he replied, "can you imagine what that guy would have done to me had I used it?"

Actually their numbers were very similar in 2006. Other than in the W/L category. Was Mitch a superstar? No. But it would have to be very hard to get a good solid start as a QB with Nutt as your coach. I mean look, 3 years of PC haven't been enough to undo the damage one year under Nutt caused.
SLC - apologies, I'm just now getting back to this thread, but actually my chosen profession had nothing to do with history, although I do do some freelance consulting for books and movies and such. I'm retired military, as an officer they offer to pay for advanced degrees if you wish to take them, originally I had intended on becoming a history teacher after my original time was up in the military but decided to remain full time military after obtaining my BA in history, so the decision to continue on the history track rather than study another subject was an easy one.

And to put up any kind of QB list and not mention my QB from my team is just stupid.

Don't get all upset, just cuz no one is mentioning UT's QB.

I think Mallet will rank 3rd in efficiency and maybe 1st in passing yards. That being said he could end up being a total fricking flop. Jefferson stats might get hurt because i think RS is going to get a lot of playing time and you know there going to run the ball alot. McCelroy and the Ginger can be mediocre and still win games if they keep mistakes to a minimum.

Bcshog, you have to refrain from statements like "3 years of Pete Carroll haven't been enough to undo the damage Nutt caused" Three years is enough time to learn a pro-style offense unless he just sucks at it.
do you actually believe your statement? Look, Mustain was a "system" QB in highschool. He looked pretty sitting back there in the shotgun and chucking it around the spread out field b/c highschool defenses couldn't stop it. He racked up all that yardage in a system that will never work in the SEC against strong defenses. You have to stop making statements like that b/c it hurts your credibility.
Nutt didn't want to put pressure on a QB to win games b/c QB's rarely win games in the SEC consistantly. he wanted the running game to win games b/c running backs do have a better chance to win games in the SEC. He wanted the QB to be able to complete some passes and not make too many mistakes. He wanted to get to the 4th quarter with a chance to win. Did you hear Petrino the other day at Media days? Now he says he wants to get to the 4th quarter with a chance to win. Nutt wanted a BusDriver. I be willing to bet Petrino will want a Busdriver soon too.

No need to apologize. I too have an undergraduate in history, never used it. Went on and got a post-graduate degree in another field. I still like to read and study history. I imagine in the military, studying history was a natural fit.

What do you mean by a bus driver?
I'm just curious.

Why would he want a bus driver? QB is a key component of Petrino's offense, that is mostly because of the balance of plays he would like to run. Assuming the game is close the ratio of run/pass 1:1. Now if the QB is a busdriver he'll likely not be able to keep that ratio relying almost solely on the running game and the odd play-action pass where extra blocker will be kept in the back field limiting the number of recievers. This may sound like a great situation but the average CB in this league will not be remained burnt in most cases and the QB most likely will be incapable of making a difficult throw meaning that the advatange of the play action is removed, thus causing more relience on the run which will meet 8 in the box and many short yardage carries. If the defense has the O-line's number at that time then the entire plan is shot. Sorry to have to say this but the best example I can think of right now is Alabama vs either Florida or Utah. They both remained steady on the play-action and explotied their run first mentality. The best plan is to have a QB of good to great skill who can win games on his arm and mind. Otherwise you will not make it all the way to your destination.
Also I hate to point this out as I never
got along well with Mitch even at the high school level but the talent at USC in the QB department is much higher than what he was going against here. Apples to Oranges basically.
Going back on topic the running game does win games but if there is little no threat of passing then the run can be stopped. The same is true in the opposite as well.
