They are "ok" for what they are, but they will never feel like a "natural fit." They are "ok" simply because we had no choice in the matter - no alternative.
As the OP admitted, they are not Southerners in any sense of the word. They have no manners, no ethics, no morals, no honor. They are excuse makers. They cheer louder for their MLB baseball games during their football games, than they do for their football games during their football games. They completely lack any sense of style or class or good form ... and their women are strictly breeding stock made of strong backs, big hips and extra fat layers genetically adopted in order to survive their environment, both culturally and climatically.
Breast feeders.
mizzerite men are raised sucking the oversized mammary glands of the ample mizzerite female breeding breasts. They continue through their young adult life sucking the breasts of uncle sugar's government cheese tit. And now they are doing nothing more than sucking at the breasts of the greatest college sports conference in the history of the world.
They are natural born suckers in every sense of the word.

I don't think Mizzou is unwelcome in the SEC, but I think the Big Ten would have been a better fit. A&M is a somewhat better fit, but not as good of a fit as it is with the Big 12.
I was born in Michigan and went to school at Mizzou. Missouri is much, much, muuuuch more like the SEC.
Trust me.
Calling them yankees is pretty funny. Kinda like calling your neighbors that have taken the wheels off their trailer those snobby rich folk

Living in Kansas I am often subjected to long drives through nothing to get to the few places worth going, on those drives I like to listen to Kansas City sports radio, specifically AM 810 - WHB.
Their typical lineup is basketball, basketball, hockey, curling and then basketball again.
Just recently:
1. Day before the SB: Detailed coverage of Mizzou's loss to UK
2. SB Sunday: Recap of loss with some KU talk most of the day, only three hours devoted to SB.
3. Monday: Ten minute recap of SB followed by 10 hour circle j on Mizzou BBall and how they'd beat UF.
It was the same story but worse for the BCS NCG. I had high hopes when Missouri joined the SEC that I'd be able to pick up some football coverage from the KC media but no...they're all basketball obsessed Yankees, and yes I realize that while they may be located in Missouri, KC and WHB are really borderline but damn. They're definitely not Southern in Western MO.
Can't speak for the rest of the state but having lived in the upper Midwest (born in Madison, family throughout WI, IN, and MN), grown up in and attended college in the South (ATL & USC) and now living on the Plains I can say that Missouri does not fit the South that I know nor the B1G country with which I'm acquainted. Got to agree with kills (cringe) in saying that they're unique. Plains+Midwest+South+Meth=Mizzou.

What you're not mentioning though is the amount of Mizzou football discussion on AM 810 WHB, which I would bet my bottom dollar is just as proportionately large compared to non-area pro or college sports as well. That's a major omission there. What it tells me is that the KC area is very obsessed with Mizzou, and the other area college teams, rather than just basketball generally. How much NBA talk do you ever hear on local KC radio? I rest my case. KC is a college sports town, much more so than places like STL or Chicago are. But they care about the local colleges only. People in the region don't care much at all about Auburn or Florida State, thats for sure, but the lack of interest has nothing to do with whether the sport being played is using a an oblong pigskin or a roundball. The interest level, in my opinion, is solely tied to whether a regional college team is involved or not.

This brings up a pretty important point. Although we by no means should or will designate anyone in the SEC as our 'kansas surrogate' as has been the accusation at times in the past, it would nonetheless be perfectly anatomically and zoologically accurate, would it not, for us to refer to Gamecocks as "beakers" if we so chose? Roosters clearly have beaks, I saw it on Animal Planet once.
So for example, "scrooster is degenerate beaker scum" would be a valid statement, not related to ku but yet still a familiar and comfortable turn of phrase for us Mizzouians.
