There are some coincidences but your average D1 team stomps your average D3. FACT

Your average D1 team has scholarship athletes at every starting position; D3 is non-schollie.

Mount Union/Wisconsin Ww would get obliterated by even the worst DIV-IA teams. Simply put having 85 scholarship players > Having 0

True. But Division II teams (not I-AA) have beaten Division I teams before. I think it happened to Stanford recently.
Division IA teams are not allowed to schedule anyone lower than DIV-IAA teams, so no.
Stanford lost to Cal-Davis in 2005...DIV-IAA. In fact Cal-Davis beat San Jose State this year.

Couldn't Coast Guard (D3) beat Army (D1)? What's the difference in their athletes?
The elite service academies get the top athletes who want to be in the military generally. Military schools like Citadel, Coast Guard, etc...do not.

UCD moved up in 2007. They were division 2 when they beat stanford.

Not entirely. Once again DIV-IA teams are NOT allowed to schedule DIV-II teams. They were a part of the Great West conference in 2005, a I-AA conference. Just on probationary status for I-AA. They simply werent a full member of I-AA at the time. The last time they played a full DII schedule was 2003 I believe. Great West started in 2004 and they were an founding member.
Same way a team like Alabama can schedule Georgia State. They are probationary I-AA team, although not a full member quite yet.

This thread is stupid. No div. 3 team will ever beat a div. 1a team. FACT.

Could you imagine them trying to slow down LSU or Auburn's DL?
But in this hypothetical scenario they wouldn't be playing an SEC team, they'd play the worst team in 1A.
Still though, I don't think it would be a likely situation at all.

UC-Davis (D2 at the time) beat Stanford a couple years ago.
D3 over D1 isn't that farfetched, considering that eight D1 schools play by D3 rules. Princeton went 0-7 in the Ivy League; Wisconsin-Whitewater could probably take them this year.
some posters are onto the percentages.
UC Davis's D-2 win was pre-Harbaugh. The QB for that Davis team played briefly in the NFL.
And yes, the Ivy gives no scholarships and the worst Ivy teams would be thrashed by Wisconsin Whitewater, the perennial D-3 champ game participant.

Ivy League(Princeton) isn't DIII.
Tulane or Memphis would murder the DIII champion.

I played D-II ball. We played a couple games against D-1AA teams. Split against Western Illinois (Gateway Conference) and got blistered against Stephen F.
We also played some D-III schools during my time. That same year we beat Western Illinois we played Lambuth U. in Jackson, TN and beat them 55 - 7.
No way a d3 should ever see the field against a d1. Upsets can happen, but I think these are limited to one level up. The talent gap is just too wide in football.

I have had the argument many times with women that the worst D-I men's basketball team would DESTROY the best D-1 women's basketball team.
That being said, the possibility of that happening is much higher than the best D-3 football team beating the worst FBS team.

what's it like? I got a few offers to play but turned them down and I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice.

D3 Wisconsin Whitewater has 11,000 students. Div 1 Mississippi Valley State has 2900. They lost every game they played in '10. UWW would crush them

That's not even a debate. An average high school team could beat UCONN's women this year. My buddy and a few others that played ball in high school in a touge league all ended up at UGA together. They would play up at the Ramsey center in their free time. End of the story is that the 5/6 of them were brought on to practice with the UGA womens' team (back when they were really good, like top 10/15 in the country). He said it wasn't even a contest, the difference between the guys and girls was just far too great. I didn't quite believe him at first, but he said they could pretty much name their score in scrimmages.

That means nothing. MVSU has scholarship athletes, UW-W has none.
