SEC expansion was happening and rearangement of schedules due to adding additional conference games. You could only play 11 regular season games at the time. LSU's conttact with A&M had 1 year left and LSU dropped the last game
with A&M. Mississippi State was moved to the 1st game of the year in place of
A&M. Scheduling was a bitch.
