Crime in Alabama, 2014 (most recent available) edition. This report is a detailed review of all reported crimes in the state broken down by jurisdiction. Actually a very interesting document.

LINK

Anyhow, the 1 in 15 number is reasonably accurate from a mathmatecial standpoint. In 2014 Birmingham PD reported 1,051 robberies, 3,750 burglaries, 8,743 larcenies, and 1,436 auto thefts. That is a total of 14,980 thefts of some type in a city of 210,000 - or 1 for every 14 people.

Now, of course that is more than a little misleading because there will be some overlap where the same act caught multiple charges and some of the crimes are going to involve businesses or victims that are not Birmingham residents so in truth not 1 in 15 Birmingham residents are robbed each year. Having said that, the fact is your chance of being robbed in Birmingham is MUCH higher than most all of the rest of Alabama. For example, Birmingham makes a little less than 1/3rd of Jefferson county's population but accounts for half of the crimes in the categories above. It accounts for 68% of the murders in JeffCo. It is Ok to love Birmingham. I like the improvements they are making very much, but to say it isn't a very dangerous city is ignoring reality. The FBI puts it in the top 10 (usually around #5) most dangerous cities over 100,000 in population every single year.

Link to stats? I've lived in the Birmingham area for 25 years and don't know a single person that has ever been carjacked. You don't even hear stories or reports very often.

Birmingham is number 5 on the FBI's top 100 list of dangerous cities: LINK

"Statistically, 1 in 74 residents was a victim of violent crime here...And when you consider the fact that 1 in 15 residents is robbed every year in Birmingham, you can see why people need to watch their backs here, especially in the center of the city where it’s absolutely crime ridden." LINK

I've never been to Randolph County. I know how shitty Birmingham is because I live in Tuscaloosa and thus am in and around Birmingham often. Like any big city, you can avoid the shitty areas by living in the better parts. Some areas there are nice. But there's no denying that Birmingham as a whole is crime ridden, poverty stricken, and run by a positively inept and corrupt city council.

Excluding UT, the other SEC teams they had played before Auburn ended up finishing 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th in the conference.

Honestly, I don't think anyone in America would have beaten Auburn that day.

With that said, I have always thought Alabama hurt themselves the night they destroyed LSU. That 32-16 final is misleading.LSU, who lost late to Auburn that year, 10-6, could not stop anything Alabama tried. I think Alabama had over 600 yards of offense. Everything Homer Smith called worked to perfection. Granted LSU's defense that night was putrid, still we had some decent players on that unit. Smith inadvertantly showed Wayne Hall and Dye his entire playbook.

Bama's playbook wasn't a secret. Remember, that same Alabama team crushed Tennessee (who finished 11-1 & #5 ranked) 47-30.

When Smith's smoke & mirrors offense was on, it was unstoppable. When it wasn't, things got ugly - which is how you crush Tennessee for their only loss and barely escape a Vandy team that only won one game.

But I do agree that Auburn brought every ounce they had to the field that day and it would have been hard for anyone to beat them.

There's some truth to that last post. But there's also some truth to the fact that that type of season was Curry's MO during his entire Bama career: he owned UT, Auburn owned him and in between, if we were heavy favorites, we'd squeak by or lose to the likes of Vandy or Memphis. And the bigger underdogs we were, the worse we would whip the arse of who was supposed to crush us. It was maddening. We would lose to Memphis one week and beat the hell out of the Vols the next. I hated those years. There were no gimme wins and you never knew which team would show up.

I have never in my life seen Alabama players leave a locker room looking like they just saw their girlfriends getting gang fricked!
