I wonder how often Mal Moore silently says "Thank you Rich Rodriquez".

Very true - he could have had multiple athletic programs shite the bed only two years removed from the football team winning an NC.

Thank goodness that didn't happen or we'd be seeing banners hanging off beach condo's and web-sites popping up with fans and students calling for his head on a platter right now.

You don't have to get bent out of shape because someone says the football program made Moore look good.

I'm not saying he was a bad athletic director. I think he was an excellent athletic director, actually. But in this state, and at this university, the success of the entire department is ultimately viewed through the lens of the football program. Had the football program not been as successful as it is Moore's tenure would be viewed differently.

Yes, he tried desperately to hire Rich Rodriguez

The way I have heard it, Saban was Moore's first choice but he couldn't wait on the guy forever. Out of necessity he went with Rodriguez and fortunately (for Alabama) Rodriguez backed out.

Moore offered Rodriguez a salary which WVA could easily match or exceed...which they did. If Mal Moore had wanted Rodriguez badly enough he could have offered him $4M a year like he did Saban. Hell, he could have even offered him only $3M and RichRod would have taken it. $2M wasn't enough.

and let's not forget the botched Fran situation (don't think he actually hired franchione, but the way he left was a big black eye)... hiring/firing mike price... hiring/firing mike shula... and pretty well botched the coaching search in 2006.

Franchione wasn't a bad hire at all...not Moore's fault that Franchione bailed.

Price was clearly a bad hire. Moore just didn't do his homework on Price. Lot's of folks in Pullman knew that Price liked to drink a lot, hang out in bars, and flirt with college girls.

Shula wasn't a bad hire because the only other option at the time was Sylvester Croom. In a way you could say it was a bad hire because it was the consequence of hiring Price, but in and of itself Shula was the best option at the time. Shula ended up being a pretty decent caretaker who got the program through probation and on a stable footing so it could be appealing to a guy like Saban.
