CB - Swann
DE - Smith
LB - Hererra
NG - Geathers (If he stays)
Are all safe bets I think.

For the purposes of this thread I'd like to keep it worse case scenario... if every player who could get drafted does...

Who cares who we put out there. We don't have a scheme set up to stop the run. We will be very talented on defense in 2013. I think experience is overated in the sec. If you know the playbook and are physically strong enough to endure the punishment of the SEC. Then you can still play at a high level even has a freshmen in this conference. We have the talent...we just dont have a DC that wants to teach fundamentals.

Smith is eligible for the draft, why would he necessarily stay? Did he already say he would stay?

He said the other day he wasn't even gonna send in the paperwork for a NFL evaluation...

Yay

At 297, will he stay at DE or maybe move to DT?
And in 3-4, is there much of a difference anyway, are those positions interchangeable?

Lots of updates. We look screwed at NT if Geathers leaves. Only 1 guy over 300#'s and no depth behind him.

That's great because smith is our best DE. I'm glad jenkins and geathers are leaving. Jenkins hurt his play by gaing to much weight.
They both dont get much penetration. I'm ready to see what chris mayes does, he is not to big yet. I think because of the lack of depth on the d-line. We didnt play at full force most of the time to keep from wearing down.

Thanks for actually contributing, I overlooked Mayes because of his 3 stars and at the bottom of the 247 page. He has been added.

It's looking like we've got LB's and DB's coming out of our arse. Screw Reuben Foster and whatever non-300+ pounder is still on the fence.

I think we will sign Reuben foster. But Reuben is not going to sign with us till signing day. He loves the attention of being wanted and keeping coaches guessing.

My understanding is that this is not the function of a NT in a 3-4 defense. Their job is primarily to clog up the middle... occasionally in obvious passing downs you see them trying to get more pressure but mostly just try and shed blocks and keep running lanes up the middle locked down.
I won't claim to be any expert on the 3-4 but that's what I've gleaned from watching/reading over the years as it has become the shiny new toy in the defensive world.

More updates... we aren't totally fricked if Geathers goes, but back to a 3-4 with no 350+ anchor at Nose.

Well whatever they are doing its not working...unless its all about our lack of depth on the d-line. What you think bro??

That's my understanding as well, if your 350# NT takes two blocks, it's like having 12 men on the field.

In the games I paid attention, Jenkins wasn't requiring two blocks most of the time. Why? I don't know, but he was pretty well handled most of the time. Geathers, on the other hand, the times I was paying attention specifically to the position, was requiring two blocks most of the time.

All I'm saying is jenkins was better in 2011 before adding more weight this year

Primary concerns on defense for me have been the style of tackling that we attempt. While I think the traditional "form tackle" is largely overrated, I do think we could stand to teach a bit more wrapping up/drag down rather than just going for big hits... Most of the yards that Alabama racked up (along with other schools) were yards after contact. That is an inexcusable stat for a defense with the level of talent that we supposedly had this year.
Making contact count and allowing your teammates to help finish off the tackle is critical. Also, we can't count on offensive holding penalties ever given our reputation for being a heavily penalized team. We have to find ways to shed blocks better and make the holds more obvious. I think that is one of the places where our D-line coaching has struggled over the years. We don't create enough movement on our d-line regularly to make holding obvious... if the jersey isn't getting pulled away from the body, you're not going to get the calls. This makes it a lot easier to run...

Another important question-
Which of the recruits above are going to be here for Spring? I'd like to put asterisks by their names or otherwise designate them has having 6 months of big boy football practice before the season kicks off.
