Won. Ugly and long but any road win vs ranked team is a quality win. So many miscues but D is starting to get turnovers. Playcallimg still suspect. Bit this cancels the OM loss.

I had us going 9-3 with road losses at TN and Bama. And I had us winning OM game. Also had us beating Tx and losing to SC on road (they were looking better before season by all accounts).

We get off week then at Bama. Bama plays LSU next week and thats a wildcard with coaching change

But we get to enjoy this big win for 2 weeks

Played a lot better in the second half but the clock management sucks. Dont know why we threw the ball on 1st down that got intercepted towards the last part of the 4th and not run the ball to run the clock.
Somebody show Mateer the play clock when he steps on the field in Tuscaloosa . I would make him take a fricking selfie with it before the game so it sticks in him mind.

Mateer seemed to get his mojo back in second half. Except that int. But he was playing with energy and throwing darts. And ran great.

Coaching is so suspect. X needs 20 runs a game. We at least get 2 weeks off to heal, injuries are adding up

The 63 yards the Sooners surrendered to Tennessee on the ground tonight was the fewest the Vols have produced in almost four years. On Nov. 13, 2021 they managed just 55 against eventual national champions Georgia.

I often find myself thinking "I bet that play worked great in the PAC-2." A gritty, much-needed win nevertheless!

Back to your point: the contrast is becoming more noticeable for me. Huepel and Kiffin have so many different ways to get WRs open in zone coverage. Not sure if it is the play design or the execution but it seems Mateer is throwing into tight coverage 99% of the time.

This is cool. Guy decided to take his boat to the game and it took him 8 days frim Oklahoma. Got there a week ago and was the last slip available in Vol Navy.

I read some stuff where Burks was not finishing routes and helping his QB. Some were screaming to bench him.

But besides that he still has too many sideways passes and not going downfield.

On the other hand one issue might be our Qb runs a lot. Receivers don’t get as many passes thrown their way as other teams perhaps so they don’t run routes as aggressive? Kanak was open all night long and JM doesn’t throw his way enough.

That Int was an RPO and I was so pissed. In no world should pass even be an option. You cannot give any team a chance with such a large crowd.

I also want to add, our Oline is getting better. Two 100 yard rushers (not counting QB) in last 2 games. We have 2 freshmen who are foundations for next year. Off season we work hard in offense and we’ll be legit contenders next year. As much as I rail on Arbuckle if we keep him we’ll have stability on offense for the first time since BV arrived. He can be good and we need to go all on offense in off season. But we have some young studs gaining experience

Defense certainly bailed us out yesterday. I wish offense could do that every now and then. Did the doc put Mateers thumb on backwards?

The stats don’t reflect what actually happened tho. We were anemic af first half on offense. Second half Mateers legs helped us out. He missed wide open receivers or didn’t put any touch in the ball in other situations. Made a couple plays late in the game including the 3rd and 16 run. Then Xavier found some juice which was nice to see. Overall it was another half-assed offensive performance. Defense out gained our offense on turn over return yards for half a football game lol. And it’s not like Tennessee are world beaters on defense either. Like I said I don’t think Mateer is 100%, Arbuckle would be better off running more like we didn’t 2nd half. At least that gives defense time to rest. Also if we are going to play more designed runs I’d put Hawkins in and add elite speed.

Oh I’m with you. I was so pissed at several O things. Like Kanak he is open almost every play and we don’t throw to him much anymore. And playcalling was both bad and good.

Thing is if we fire OC then we start over again. And we can’t keep doing that with the D title ready. So as hard as it pains me to say we must keep Arbuckle another year to get stability and recruits and pray he improves his playcalling

I also think a light switch came on for Mateer in 2nd half. Other than boneheaded INT he played like early season in 2nd half. I think he got his confidence back.

And JM has 2 weeks to get really healthy plus some other players. I feel confident we’ll give Bama a fight. Not sure we can win but think with them playing a wildcard LSU this week and us off will help. Players in teams with just fired coaches seem to play better. And Bama has no idea what to plan for as desperate teams can install some way different plays.

I was impressed by our physicality. We were flying to the ball and laying some licks. Good pressure most of the night. DL played well. They tried to pick on Guillory, but I think he held his own for a freshman.
