I had the exact same thought at some point during the game. Mateer kept holding the ball too long on timing routes, then having to fire lasers as a result. To me, that seemed to be why he had that bewildered look on his face most of the game. Yeah, so what do we do? "Fire more of them lasers, Johnny!" I can't get past this stat: Mateer + Sategna = 16 rushes. All the RBs combined: 13 rushes. 13!!
Every OC decision BV has made were just lazy, I don't know how else to describe it. We needed Mateer and "oh what the heck, let's bring the Wazoo OC as well." Some went so far as to say he was the next great offensive mind, etc. but all you had to do was look at Arbuckle's resume to see he was not some magician.

He did look mediocre but he had the worst excuse of an O-Line in all of D1 football. I hated to see him go because I think his ceiling is far higher than Mateer's.

It is funny how OU fans (maybe all teams' fans?) get caught up and talk themselves into believing their own assumptions. Case in point: the hiring of Ben Arbuckle.
All I read on other OU boards was how this guy was the next big up & coming OC, a true can't-miss hire, an "offensive genius", etc. which was 100% due to the fact he was Cam Ward's OC for 2 seasons. But dig deeper and you'll find that Cam Ward was already a hot commodity before following his head coach Eric Morris to WSU. Arbuckle was a co-OC at Western Kentucky for one year, then an OC at WSU for 2 years before Brent made him a package deal w/Mateer. That's it.
But I got absolutely castigated for pointing this out and voicing my opinion about the Tulane OC (can't remember his name) having a much more solid resume.
As it normally happens, most of those people would deny ever championing the Arbuckle hire.

Agree. But you have to realize we had shite for OC all BV tenure. And it seemed Arbuckle was better, having made playoffs with dinged up QB and other O positions. Bring in an outstanding TE coach/room plus RB room changes and experience on oline. I was super pumped about the positive changes. And game 1 gave us even more hopium
But instead of using those new weapons which would have minimized Mateer needing to save the day he stopped what worked and decided to make Mateer a hero on road in hostile stadium. That really is all I can come up why he would stop what worked. Be wanted to make his boy look good.
Had we ran, we likely win going away. Gash em early and lean on them. 4th quarter they are beat especially if you have a good lead you can run run run and as they stack box presto you have an open receiver for TD.
It made zero sense to stop running. Now you lost confidence of olime when running would have shown they are good. Plus you learn a lot for future games you need to run.
I am over Assbuckle. You cannot throw a game away with our conf schedule. We can only lose 1 more game to make playoffs. And our schedule is brutal. Only 1 team is not ranked in top 30. Give playcalling to Wilson. Can keep Assbuckle for pride sake but let Wilson prep the week and call plays. Problem with that is he’s an analyst I think due to how many coaches you can have. If he is activated someone has to be deactivated or gone

In the Venables era, OU has played in 20 one possession games:
- 6–1 when the defense scores
- 4-9 when the defense does not score
- 10-10 overall but dangerously close to 4-16 if the defense doesn’t bail them out
Cannot keep counting on the defense to put up points.

The 2026 season is very young (only 100 FBS vs FBS games through Week 2), but the average number of possessions per game continues to trend downward.

I have to think Wilson would already be the OC if he wanted it. He's 64 years old now and he may just not want all the responsibility that comes with being the OC.
We are so snakebit at OL the past 5 or 6 years. It's incredible. It was hard watching Fodje, he clearly was not 100% (no excuse for the RBs getting only 13 carries, of course) and I thought we were done with RPO. We hardly ever pass out of that formation, its just a slow-developing handoff for a short gain or a loss 80% of the time

We focus on Arbuckle but why isn't Brent forcing the issue, he is the HC after all. It is troubling to think he hasn't learned - Lebby and Littrell had no concept of clock management. One or two games, sure. More than that - it's on Brent.
Hell, Joe Jon Finley may have had the best gameplan for a high-profile matchup when we beat Alabama at home, WITH Jackson Arnold.

True. Brent chewed some defensive arse in game 1 when they didn’t perform. Where is that on offense when they screw up.
And I must note, Arbuckle has some decent schemes at times but Mateer can’t execute them. We did have open players he just made wrong reads or bad throws.
But his not running is inexcusable. I am still numb why he didn’t run more on the road.

I'm still numb too. 100% demoralized.
I hate to bag on Mateer but he has trouble with longer throws. Every pass does not need to be a laser. Has big time trouble putting air under the ball.
I really want to see what Neubauer can do. NFL QB frame, cannon arm, runs well. Why not?

This is the play I’m referencing:
Oklahoma has the ball, first and ten, up 9, in field goal range. Tennessee has two timeouts.
Chris Fowler: “Now for the #Sooners it’s tick, tick, tick, they can really work on the clock here, fresh set of downs. Mateer looking to throw? And it’s INTERCEPTED!”
Mateer counts the box, and makes the read he’s been taught to make:
Heavy box = throw.
But common sense says to run the ball even if there are 30 in the box. The only way Tennessee can win is if you give the ball back. Don’t put the ball in the air. Especially a fast ball into traffic.
Stop trying to outsmart people all of the time and abandon common sense.

I have even less respect for Assbuckle after hearing portions of his press conference. Without going into all the details, he does not come off like an OC at a blue-blood institution.
He's a 32 year old with only 2 prior seasons at the D1 level against weak defenses. He may be effective against the big boys some time in the future, but he was simply not ready for this job.

RichRod has an offense well suited for a good to great running QB and who can hit passes when the box is stacked. It is kind of the opposite of BA's air raid.
