You don't have to be able to relate to are to appreciate it. I can't relate to Mozart or Miles Davis or Hank Williams, Sr., but can appreciate their art.
I'm in my mid 40's and have never really cared much for rap or hip hop music, but can definitely see the talent in Kendrick Lamar.

Listened to Kendrick Lamar's latest album. I don't get the appeal at all. Maybe it's relative to the current mainstream hip hop scene with such lyrical masterminds as Migos and Lil' Pump.
Someone please tell me what makes him better than someone like Nas or Aesop Rock.
