My Border Collie was absolutely the best. Loyal, intuitive, easy to housebreak but loved the outdoors and riding around. Lost her to Cancer.
Looking at adding another down the road. Also intrigued by the Vizsla and the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Heard great things about both breeds.

The thing I like so much about my Collie Shepherd mix is that I don't really have to work with her on training like you would expect to. She just frickin listens. To everything I say.
I can set her to a job and she just does it. I've never seen a dog like that. I didn't realize dogs could even BE that smart or driven to please. She is also a total sweetheart. A little excitable, but she loves all people and all animals. Just a really, really good dog.
I've been tempted to start breeding and training collies up to be farm dogs. Lol. Just because they're so much fun.
My lab mix is getting a little long in the tooth. She isn't "old" per se, but she's getting up there in age and her hips are starting to bother her. She will be the next dog to be replaced (hopefully not for another 5 healthy years or so though) and I'll need another dog that makes a good watch dog.
So these days I like to peruse Craigslist until I find one I think will work for the job. Loads of folks always looking to get rid of a dog and it's a good way to find a good dog. Both the dogs I have now came from families that couldn't handle their dogs. Meaning they had these dogs cooped up in small houses or apartments and both the bird dog and herding dog kinda need some pasture land or something they can roam around on. Got both these two dogs (my favorite dogs ever) for free on Craigslist.
It's sorta fun to research the breeds that the dogs come from and see if you can figure out which traits they'll have.
But I'll tell you guys, if any of y'all are farmer types and are looking for a good dog, the Australian Shepherd Border Collie cross may be the finest farm dog ever bred.
ETA: I also like watching my Collie run. That dog is like damn greased lightning when she gets after something. Fast as the wind and can turn on the run so fast you just wouldn't believe it.

1. Great personalities and fun.
2. Short hair, so easy hygiene
3. Mostly easy going. They have be hyper, while also being pretty chill. Mine laid on the couch with me all day yesterday watching football and content.

Poon Hound?
Go out to the park, he is the ultimate wingman, and works for treats
For the person asking about Rhodesian Ridgebacks my opinion is mine was the best dog ever followed by a Rot / Dane mutt I had later.
Pretty much all dogs are smart but may not be people pleasers. Labs are people pleasers but hounds are not. I have a hound that knows what to do but chooses to ignore it. Still love him but he would trade me for a bone in a heartbeat.

Can verify. My lab pointer mix has the personality traits of the sight hound but appearance of the lab. She really couldn't care less about pleasing people and is very independent. Still very smart though.

Interesting that no one mentions Catahoula Curs. We used to raise them and while they are great dogs, they're not for everyone.

German Shepard
Rottweiler and Dobermans
I like large breeds.
Those are 3 of the most intelligent breeds of dogs.
When we'll trained and properly exercised they have a very laid back temperaments, and obviously provide great protection for you and your family.
