I am having to drive a friend to Intercontinental, and need to be there by 7:45am Monday morning.
How heavy is traffic coming from the East on 10, to IAH? I'm thinking leaving the Quarter at 1:30 should give us enough time. Assuming at least a couple stops for a smoke(or red bull).

I don't know about I10 but drove from Cypress (northwest Houston) into downtown down 290 at 4:00am on a weekday not long ago and there was nobody on it.

Looks like you take beltway 8 around from i-10. That should be going against traffic i believe, so not too horrid.

Alright thanks, I have driven in Houston, once, 15 years ago. And it was it was going the exact opposite direction. Sugarland to New Orleans.
So 6 hours should be enough time?

You should be good with 6 hours. It takes me 4 1/2 hours to drive BR-Houston (Cypress) in normal traffic with one pee/food break.

Check this before you leave as Texas does a lot of road construction at night and on the weekends. I-10 around Orange is a mess right now.

TxDot

You will hit rush hour traffic coming in around 7am but will miss a lot of it by:

Taking Beltway 8 North (tolls and cops) when you get in town, then US 59 North to Will Clayton west then to IAH.

Safe trip.

Just to be prepared. How much is the toll, and is it exact change?
And thank you about the info on the road construction around Orange.

I think you'll run through 2 toll stations between I-10 and US 59. They're about $1.00-$1.50 each. You could take the feeder around but that will take forever and you'll hit 10 lights.

The other option is to take I-10 to I-45 but that will feed you right into town at rush hour-you probably don't want to risk that.

Everything is electronic-you will be billed to the address that's on your license plate. You essentially are having a "violation" by not having a toll tag. Here's a link to the toll road system in Houston.

Just get a $10 roll of quarters to take with you. When you drive up there is a sign with the rate. There is a basket you can toss the coins in that funnels into the electronic counter. All the tolls should be in 25c increments. Everyone any Houston has an account with an EZ tag sticker on their window so most of us havent stopped at a toll booth in a decade.

Do you get charged some insane fee for that?

It's an extra 1.50$ onto the toll fee every time you pass through a toll without a tag.

That's not bad. If you never drive in TX, is it a MUST pay? Thinking of getting a new license plate anyways(so I can park in Orleans Parish).

No tolls are just ways to make money off foreign folks. Its actually a joke which is why everyone uses the other 2 far left lanes to drive through. Just follow them.

Zero, take I-45 to 610 loop west or (possibly called 610 south because its a loop) to 59 south. You should expect some traffic in the Galleria area on 610 no matter what time of day. But if you pass between 10-3 it shouldnt be too bad.

At that time of morning take the new 99 tollway from 45 north all the way. They will just mail you a bill
