Depends how you define intelligence

From education angle probably not but he more than made up for it in human interaction and power skills. Making you staff keep up while you are crapping is an extreme form of control.

People under estimate LBJ in large part because he cultivated a very backwoods country accent. Something he went out of his way to keep I should add.

He also gets compared, unfavorably, to JFK. A belief that is unfair in my opinion. Both were men who wanted power, both were serial philanders, both men had battles with addiction (LBJ drank and JFK was a pill popper). But LBJ was by far the harder worker.

Many of the accomplishment that JFK is praised for were actually carried out by LBJ. Civil Rights, the space program, and the like all saw LBJ doing the heavy lifting.

He was no dummy. Believing that a man so gifted in controlling others and managing power was a simpering idiot under the thumb of the CIA and Mob is like believing that the Earth is flat. The facts just don't fit the belief.

He was a good politician. One doesnt become a leader of the senate if they are poor at politicing. Giving tacos and beers out to win the relatively untapped mexican vote, the maintaining of that accent, etc. is evidence of his cunning. It's why some think he was involved in the assassination (as well as his loss to JFK in the primaries and rumors of animosity between them)

It is funny how we let the media decide who is smart and who is not...

Carter was one of, if not the smartest - portrayed as country bumpkin
Reagan was not bright but had looks and charisma with woman - seen as genius
Nixon was never given the credit for long term vision
Bush Jr was given too much credit for long term vision
LBJ was cunning indeed - portrayed as backward Texan
JFK was portrayed as clean cut - dad was major bootlegger the media ignored
Obama played the black card - white was his correct personality
Bush Sr was viewed as RR lackey - ran the CIA

There was a whole host of reasons that led to the assassination of JFK, IMO. He wanted to disband the CIA, he wanted to pull the US out of the federal reserve banking system (biggie), he didn't support going to war in Vietnam so the CIA would have a source for their upcoming "War on Drugs" that they intended to create, he wouldn't play ball on the frame up of Cuba meant to justify the invasion of Cuba, and above all he wanted to do what was best for the PEOPLE of this country, not kowtow to the fascists who now run this country.

For all of those things listed above he was killed. And George Bush Senior orchestrated it all, if you ask me.
